would be interesting to test the water for hardness - it will have a higher concentration of salts/carbonates in it as these are not evaporated. Depending on yuor source water hardness this could be a good or a bad thing.

IMO I'd run it to fruit trees etc.

older model evaps had the same water (except for the top up) in all the time unless you went and drained it yourself, newer ones dont retain the water for the reasons stated above, the one we have empties if turned of and also empties then flushes for a bit and refills ever three hours.

Right, well tonight I will get the model number and booklet out, and I will get some water in a container and take it to be tested. I don't have a hardness test kit, but I might check out the pH anyway and compare it to the tap. And do another comparison after 24 hours for both tap and aircon water.
Keep an eye out for my results.

Mum works at CSIRO so I should ask if she can sneak a sample to the boys in one of the labs and tell me exactly what's in it.

Also my aircon sounds like Brad's - flushes every few hours and then again when it's turned off.
