That is what I was thinking. So I must ask what is your main air pump/ Or do you not use one as your DWC is now a CF bed?

Honestly I got zero air pumps in my entire system.. I simply reroute water from the discharge to the FT.. loads of air is produced... but no air is pumped into CF GB.

Does any one else get the feeling that building a aquaponic system. Is like building a computer. No matter how much you think you know. Or how well it is designed. There will be new information in about 2 months that makes some part of your system. Obsolete :dontknow:

nah.. just make it the best way possible and improve after.. because if you try to gain all the information before starting.. you will loose out on the gift of learning from your own system.. look where I started from. a 10 gal tub. take a look at my youtube videos

Cookie,

Yeah I tend to jump into the deep end on things. Usually without the backup I have with this site. My "starter" system takes up half of my backyard.

For anyone interested in building a sieve filter There is an improved version on youtube. Better self cleaning.

Thanks Boss,

Since Koi need very clean water. Their owners filtration systems have to be on par or even slightly overkill for what we truly need in Aquaponics. As we generally have a media filled GB or 2 to finish polishing the water that they don't.

I would dare to say that a media bed does not polish the water. It let's quite a bit of fines through.

Swede,

Is that all MBs or does it differ depending on what you have them filled with? I.E. pea gravel vs. lava rock, or even finer media like vermiculite. Once established that is. As I was under the impression that the smaller media has a greater tendency to clog because it's lack of void space between them. Causing it to trap more particles.

I guess my point is that a media bed may not be enough of a filter prior to a raft bed.

Media selection would play a part for sure as well as flow through it as well as size of bed.
Think about it why fine sand is a better fines filtration than gravel size.. Just saying [WINKING FACE]
