cod will eat anything that fits in there mouth... which includes anything about twice there size... your goldfish wont last long with them.

probably just best to stick with more silvers. i did pick up a heap of solvers from another member here wanting to quit AP and all but one died as well.

Hi Dan,

I would like have fish growing for many years.
Not interested in eating fish.
Silver never lasted even a couple of months for me.
Many goldfish lasted more than two years.

I may consider partitioning pond.
Cod seem a long lasting one.

from memory, back when you had issues with silvers your system was new and changing? had issues with levels etc? if so, now your system is aged you shouldnt have the issues you used to.

sorry if my memory fails me.... but i think you will be ok with a new lot of silvers now that your system is aged and running well

For the non-fish eating APians wouldn't a beautiful fish like Koi fit the bill?

pretty sure they are illegal (and for very good reason) in SA.. maybe you could instead just grow some cane toads in your AP.... i hear they are great for the environment......

We've had carp released into one of the major rivers going through South Australia, they've wiped out many native species, and they rip up all the undergrowth, and muddy up the river.

It used to have crystal clear water, but now you can't see a few cm's in front of your face. If carp are released, it won't be long before they are increasing the gene pool for the carp in the river.

I've got goldies in my system, and going to get some catfish soon, neither will be for eating, and both can live considerable time, and get to really good sizes.

fortunately/unfortunately most of the large ones are boys... so they will be dinner first and keep the girls to keep breeding.... i think im gonna need more space...

Is it easy to tell apart sex?
Is yabby compatible with goldfish?

I am leaning towardfirst increase goldfish population
then adding silver perch and cat fish.

its hard to spot females "bits" but i pretty much just look to see if its got male "bits" and if i cant see any male bits i assume its a female, if that makes sense. you can see on the male it has 2 small bits sticking out from the first segment of its last set of legs where as the female doent hope that makes sense. once you check a few yourself it gets easier altho where i got mine i was catching mostly males (probably 2/3rds male and 1/3rd females) so it did take me a while to catch on at first.

yabbies will eat a fish if it can catch it, with most fish this isnt a problem unless the fish is sick because they dont swim at the very bottom but ive no idea specifically about goldies vs yabbies but if you like your goldies and dont want them to beccome accidental yabbie food i wouldnt mix them.

my yabbies will be going into a separate tank, at the moment they are split up between a 1000L fish tank inside and 2 ~500L sumps outside.

Thanks for your replies. You are studious. If tank is reasonably deep and goldfish healthy, then may be ok?

Hi Dan and Colum,

I just ordered 100 small silvers.
I was away in Innes National Park.
My last silver died and many newly aquired goldfish died even though the old ones which are large are ok. I am puzzled about the reason. But I will try with small silvers again and see what happens. I will be happy if 50% survive 6 months. As for delivery mode and date, i asked Narrabi, but is it already set?
