When you work it out, $23 + P/H to grow approx 3-4kg of Mushies isnt too bad

That seems a bit expensive too me. Every year I get a couple of the mushroom kits from Bunnings or similar and get heaps of mushies, they were about $14 this year from memory.

Taste heaps better than store ones too.

Cheers

I am going to try Shiitake Mushrooms from fungi.net, they seem a reasonable price,
Anyone tried growing them? I will get a She-Oak log from the GWH and try them in there

Hi M3tal
I grew mushrooms from a kit many years ago and was impressed with the quantity, quality and constant supply haven't seen a kit for many years until about a month ago our local nursery had them for sale I went for the portobellos, have them in the shed so probably a bit cold (a bathroom is ideal) so they were a little slow to start, so far had 2 good meals from them and I expect they will really start pumping as the weather warms.
Of course I use AP water

Interesting that the first few crops were growing close to the sides I suspect more warmth and moisture

Nocky, any luck with the srooms? Sorry to bring back an old thread but I was just reading about homegrown mushrooms. It seems like they like the moisture, which would be great in a aquaponics system. Anyway, did you find out anything?

Hey Kwieland, you want to check out Big worms stuff over on the Backyard farming forum. http://backyardfarming.com.au/phpbbb/vi ... f=31&t=505

He makes all different sorts of mush room kits as well as now some commercial production kits as well.. Very interesting stuff.... :thumbright:

Thanks guys. Very interesting indeed. I wonder what the tricks are to making it work. Obviously the humidity/moisture/temperature are important. I wonder if it is like AP - start off monitoring everything (like nitrites, etc) until you get a good handle on it?

I read on here someone using organic materials for their grow medium. I wonder if you could inoculate that and grow mushrooms and plants at the same time? Wouldn't that be amazing!

Anyone know what type of mushy this is? I took a bite this morning and have only now just come down from riding a unicorn to candy mountain.

Every year or two theres a story in the paper about someone picking mushies they thought were something else, and people getting very sick from it.

As far as mushrooms are concerned, decide what type you are after. so called "Button" mushrooms[Agaricus bisporus] include portobello's, crimini, and standard white buttons. They are fairly hard to grow in comparison to wood dwelling mushrooms such as "shiitake, oysters, and ganoderma[lingzi, Reishi]
there are a few practically impossible mushrooms to grow as well. Matsutake, maitake, trumpets, chantrelles, and porcini's. the reason most of these are so impossible is because some require a "living Host" basically a pair of trees where each tree is parasitically infested with the same or similar strain of mycelia. once the roots touch each other the ends of each of the mycelia begin to breed and produce a "fruiting Body"[aka the MUSHROOM] if you want to avoid that choose a non-live host requiring type. Then order spawn plugs and go to it.
I would recommend "Shiitake75" Its a strain that blooms at 75 degrees F there are some colder strains but this one can be placed indoors to bloom over the summer when nights stay above 75. as far as the common buttons, check out the "how to grow Mushrooms" dvd series. If you can put up with the hippie music and tie-dye backgrounds as well as his incessant rant on how "Magic Mushrooms" are the answer to all of life's problems, then he gives some amazingly sound advice for growing mushrooms, creating your own mushroom spawn, expanding growing operations, and even isolating your own rare strains of mycelia from wild mushrooms[quite possibly the most difficult thing I have ever done in my entire life]
The last few parts arent essential you could always spend the $ and buy ready made spawn. However that does become extremely expensive in the long run, and your strain wont be dedicated[meaning you could get a mix of mycelial strains and it will be detrimental to their Fruiting] and production rates will fall to almost nothing of the growth will become stunted and you'll get dwarf mushrooms.
Kits are the way to go to learn the how to care for mushrooms side of it. but you'll end up with very expensive mushrooms, strain isolation is the cheapest method available that will produce a few thousand dollars worth of mushrooms on roughly $30--$100 worth of material. Weigh your options and figure out how deep down the rabbit hole you are planning on venturing!

I recommend you visit http://www.shroomery.org Just be careful how you speak to them. 99% of the members are consummate druggies and junkies, and at least half of them are college professors and research scientists.
