Colum has already suggested channeling but if that were true I would expect that either end of the bed would be doing well instead of just the inlet.

One of my beds, which has been taken over by strawberries (needs thinning out) has an area of strawberries in the middle, but closer to the drain, with the leaves showing deficiencies, dark green veins in leaves that have turned light green. All the others around it look nice and healthy with dark green leaves. The bed has had some large plants (mainly celery) which I left the roots in when removing the gone to seed plant, as they were too massive to remove, so I suspect some channeling may be happening in this GB.

What is the history of the bed in question Stuart?

Now that I've created a thread for everyone to have a laugh at my expense (including me) back to the plants.

:laughing3:

I was just a little flummoxed as I thought they're all constant flow in terms of where the water comes from - a pump. Then in the bed you have F&D or CF?

Martin was that CF Constant Flood or Continuous Flow?

Stuart if you are not going to dig up a couple of plants dig a small hole in each bed, stick your hand in and wiggle your fingers for about 30 seconds. Remove your hand and rinse with water only, if your hand still smells you have a problem. :)

Trust me, first stage anaerobic reduction smells pretty bad, if it is that your skin will absorb a bit of it and just rinsing with water will still leave you with smelly hands. It's a lot cheaper than any other method. :)

I have two GBs both 1m x 16m long. Both have been run for the same amount of time. This one has been run as a flood and drain while the other has been run constantly flooded.

Yeah nothing like that. I did go check again and my hands smelt kind of...wet and a tad earthy. Mind you the FnD bed smells more earthy from memory.

Yeah, I was lost with those too.

One thing I noted about Joel's systems, they have the inlets spread around the whole bed with PVC tubing with holes in it? So it's evenly spread through the whole system.

I wanted to have a play with a DO probe, to see what my levels are in the constant flood/DWC, but it seems expensive for a few simple tests. I'm currently replacing all the 40mm gravity fed pipes with 90mm pipes, so I can increase the flow through the beds (it's quite slow atm, because any faster will make the beds overflow), I'm hoping that'll give it better growth.

I can bring mine over if that helps. I use a YSI 556 Multiparameter meter that is calibrated daily.

Let me know when.

Or.. Ebb and Flow Vs Continuous Flow... What kind of system do you like to have? Why?

Please share your experiences and developmental hurdles while using these systems.

We are now digging for an octagonal grow bed.. dimensions of one side is 5 feet x 2 feet x 1 feet times 7.

I appreciate your time in providing this input.

I am relatively new to this, I wanted a water feature under the patio. I saw some fish in a water feature, so I wanted to add fish. Then I saw Frans first system on you tube. Then I visited BYAP. And saw Barramundi! Simple logic Frans first system would not support what I had in mind. So I expanded a bit and added filters, I still want to expand further but time and money.

I have used bells as its apart of a water feature. The sound off running water, the return from the filter again is the sound off running water.

My system is a back yard system. A hobby. A test to see if it works.

But what I do know is I have 3 silver perch and 4 Barramundi swimming in my back yard. Plus lots of veggies in just the five months. Not bad for a water feature!
