Yea, very similar climates. In fact. I was watching a recent documentary on sharks. The documentary was mostly in Perth. But then they flew to San Diego to look at a camera system that can detect sharks at a depth of 15 feet. What was really funny is the camera is by a company that I drive by every day. Yesterday I was talking to someone who works for the company about said documentary. (He was mostly surprised anyone watched it)

Definitely glad I dispatched the trout before this weekend. 44 at mine today and it had hit 36 by 9 am.

Sorry about the shark pics, my brother in-law was bragging about being involved in David Riggs next sea-life doco' and i got lost in dreamland.

I 'm ready to get my next stage going, the yabbitat!

the basic plan is to dam the shallow end of the pool into 2 ponds which I will keep at a min of 250mm deep.
Males in one and Females (mainly) in the other.

What I need is some ideas on the nesting/hiding device for the yabbies, the obvious are PVC tubes and such what if there is a way to support denser living conditions without the murderous carnage.

I couldn't go the commercial battery system using plastic juice bottles. The ones that look like something out of the "matrix" movie

But a one ended unit with enough flow through to keep it clean may be the way to go? something that enabled them to still walk around freely but be able to hide securely when attacked.

I have heard some farmers use barley straw in the dams to provide nesting spots, not sure how that would go in an AP system?

Cut lengths of PVC piping to 300-500mm and use a heat gun to squash the middle then tie them all together. Yabbies burrow in dams but there may be some instances where barley straw is used as babies can hide out in it but straw is usually for algae control.

I saw a guy on youtube and he had the PVC pipes sitting vertically in the base of the tank?

you could get a lot more in if the tubes were vertical or maybe at 45º?

It would make it hard to keep clean as I'd think solids would settle in them and get trapped though

Yes, I thought of that, maybe be on a mesh grid so that water could flow though and under?

then you could pull out the grid section with the tubes full of yabbies :)

That sound like a go.
Maybe you could still slot them all into milk crates, then you could pull out a crate full at a time ( I know, I just like milk crates). :dontknow:

beans are going gangbusters, but some of the zucchinis are rotting, The higher ones I took the flower off and they seem to be going ok, is that a coincidence or are you supposed to remove the flower when its finished?

thanks Ron, makes it easy when I know what to google ;)

my searching had most saying lack of calcium or Ph beyond 6.0 to 6.5 causing low calcium uptake.

my Ph is about 7.8! so that may be the issue? (bad me, first test for over 2 months)

interestingly I used my old pool test strips and the Ph looks more like 7.2 or maybe 7.0?
