Found a floater today that wasn't there yesterday. It's getting warm here so was going to pull them all out tonight but DH got home too late. Pulled out said floater and worms came out of it! They don't look like maggots, they aren't moving. I've searched worms but you can imagine how many irrelevant posts came up. Any ideas?

Can you take another picture of the worm by its self? Streched out possibly?

I was going to say tapeworm but didn't want to jump to conclusions... Tapeworms are pretty common in fish.. Very bad if consumed by humans.

The tapeworms need a crustacean as an intermediary host. I don't have crustaceans.

are you sure you dont?

Although not in my AP system, i have plenty of freshwater bugs in ponds on my property, some resemble very tiny shrimp.
There is also a chance that the trout eat a native freshwater shrimp, etc at the troutfarm.

I'd be very, very surprised if you didn't have any crustaceans in your system.

Remember slaters are crustaceans.

The fish in lake Colac were regularly reported to have worms. You were meant to fillet the fish and hold it up to the light. IF there were worms you could see them in the fillet. Needless to say you didn't eat the fillets with worms.

Crisis potentially averted. God I hope I'm right. I dissected (gross) and it looks like worms may have actually been intestines. Can someone please verify?

If crustaceans are commonly in systems I wonder why worms aren't more common? Unfortunately I have not had time to dispatch my fish today and my next free day is Friday so I hope they last through the next 2 predicted hot days.

Hi Colours,

That looks like pyloric caeca. Probably the fish was injured.

Regards,
