Do you have limits on how much food it can drop out in one day?

Yes, in number of seconds of auger (so a little fuzzy), based on what my system can cope with minus a bit.

But the temperature thing might allow for more feeding because the bacteria probably do their thing better at different temperatures, and the fish metabolise differently, and I think there is a relationship between how much ammonia and nitrite the fish can cope with based on the water temperature (although my limits dont allow for any.

I started with an amount of food I knew my system could cope with in a day, then tested how many seconds of auger delivered that amount of food.

I divided that by the number of feeds I thought would be fun, then made an LED come on near the switch if there was still feed allowed for the day.

If you really wanted to give them the maximum your system allows, it would probably be better to create a maximum allowance over 5 hours or so. especially if you do the research to figure out how your system behaves at different temperatures.

I removed my feeder because my fish has turned vegitarian as it's gotten older. I just have one big silver running my system now, and all it eats is duckweed and lettuce. oh and worms. It seems worms are to some vegetarian fish as fish is to some vegetarian humans.

Hey nicbaz,

How does your Pi connect to it's outside world? WiFi or cat cable? I'm also interested in how you hook up your IP cameras and how they interact with all your software? ? Could y0u explain that a little more please?

How big are your submerged cages and stocking rates? Could a smaller version of cages be in an IBC, such that there is an even and steady nutrient load for grow beds?

Anybody else with cage experience?

The Pi is connected to the internet via cat5, through a tp-link powerline (EoP) adapter, which is connected to a switch.
The underwater camera is also connected to this switch via ethernet, and the second camera is connected via WiFi.
The camera's have static IPs, and port forwarding is configured such that I can access each camera externally. Same with the HTTP server, also port forwarding on port 80.

The cage is probably a cubic meter or so. I don't really think it would affect nutrient load and distribution, as the nutrients are all water soluble.

Cheers.

They're wanscam IP cameras, the underwater one connected via ethernet, and the other wifi.

My kids have asked what I want for Christmas. I'm thinking the mating Pi camera and maybe a USB wifi capability.

Anyone have experience with the Pi camera?

Anyone recommend a wifi hardware solution?

Sorry it's long past Christmas! For RasPi accessories, I always take a look at Adafruit.com -- In my experience, they do a great job determining what [doesn't] work with each platform. So check their Raspberry Pi accessories for a wifi adapter. Once you find one you like, shop around. But keep in mind that Adafruit offers a discount pretty much every Wednesday evening -- Just watch their "Ask An Engineer" webcast. They'll mention a discount code at the beginning of the show, around the middle, then right before the end of the show. It's usually about 10% discount, which can cover the shipping.
