plastic laundry hamper/basket/something with flyscreen glued around it and something to help it float at the top, done. once they are big enough for your tank just let thm out

I hadn't thought about that. Will it allow enough water circulation through there (for oxygen/ammonia)? I'd hate to slowly kill them.

nice idea with the washing basket

Try and get a basket with the narrow slots like this one then cable tie a poole noodle around it. Drill a series of 6 mm holes in the bottom. We got some fingerlings awhile back which were way too small so I used a second basket inside the floating one. Lined the vertical supports half way across the slots and it was ok. Drill holes in the bottom of the second basket as well.

No problems with water flow and they lived in my main tank for a couple of months.

I did the same with dam caught red fin. I sat the basket under the return water from the sump. So the clean water is forced through the basket and therefore the is no risk of a build up of harmful toxins in the basket. The only thing I didnt like about it was there eventually was a slight build up of excess food and poo. I had shade cloth around the basket so I had to wait until the fish were large enough to remove the cloth.

I can go one better than a pic Bear! ;) :thumbleft:

Heres a vid of some of my SP in my floating basket from a couple of years ago after a salt bath. You can see the flow of water is really good through them and you don't get any build up on the bottom or anything.

Sorry, I'm out of action for the next few weekends, too much on. So I haven't been pushing it as urgently. I won't really have a free weekend to run around delivering fish until the 15th - 16th November.

By my count:
Me: 35 (I upped mine just then, need more fish anyway)
Krissy :35
Samrota: 25
Mike: 20 odd

If I missed anybody, please let me know.

So 115 fingerling all up.

I'm happy with 1aquaponics, depends on what others want to do though. But if we get anymore people wanting fish, it gets cheaper to get from livefish, there is a wait with them though.

krissyj, look into Dipel for the cabbage moth issues.

It's organic, works exactly as described, and doesn't hurt the fish.

You'll find it in most hardware stores.

cheers Bullwinkle.

this sounds silly but I actually love the white cabbage moth (butterfly) flying around the place, I live by the rule of each creature has their place, the cabbage moth will eventually introduce another benificial insect that will have their own feed on these little guys, I have many a insect in my yard, I am on a journey to make my property into a food forest, its a long job but I hope to have a long life hehehehe

But the bacteria in Dipel have the right to kill cabbage moths.

Nobody stands up for the little guy :)

You need Butcher birds. I was watching on on the Murray River the other day, and it was collecting every one that flew buy within 500m or so.

I'm about to help a friend set up a system so I'll check with him.

I can house them in my system until he's ready for them.

If I siliconed up the rest of my system, I could buy some as well.

How many more do you need to get a better rate?

Also, does anyone in Adelaide have some baby yabbies I could buy?

I could pass a few on a few yabbies if you like, how much are you willing to pay for 10 yabbies

Whatever they're worth :)

How big are they?

this is both an intro and a contributing point to the SP's ... haha

sooo intro first

Im Jesse - from mount barker in SA,
had a system running for a bit over a year now about to pull out my winter trout.
about to expand my system to indoor tanks and building new GB's out of fridge panel i picked up last weekend.

some of you may know me from the practical aquaponics forums - spend more time there.

anywho, re the SP's
Narrabri Fish Farm are going to be doing a run over to SA in Jan with a truck and are only charging $35 for delivery, they're waiting till jan so that they have eel tailed catfish and Murray Cod available, but the prices are good - worth a google.

i might watch this thread as it seems to have a few more south aussies in it

Cheers

Jesse out /

Great first post Jesse! I do remember you on Practical AP forum, I jumped ship a while ago. :wave1:

They are a lot cheaper than anything local.

1aquaponic are $2.46 per fingerling, while Narrabri are $1.40 per fingerling, and between a group of us, the postage won't work out to much. And I've been on the look out for the ell tail catfish for a while now, I'd prefer them over the silver perch to be honest, but I couldn't find them anywhere. And ausyfish want you to buy a minimum order before of perch before they'll sell them.

What does everybody think? I'd quite happily take 50 catfish, and 20 silvers.

Howdy all. I am good for 30, however I will be looking to get them sooner than later. I wont wait until january to save a little. I am about to loose my nutrient supply as the trout will not last too much longer(they are tasting too good). So id be happier paying a little more to get them sooner. I have a paypal account and have a bit of room for short term fish storage in the way of 1600 litres of ibc and a 200 litre fish tank
cheers a

Whatever everyone decides on, I'm wiling to drive to wherever I have to and buy the fishies and deliver them to everyone for whatever it costs me in fuel.

I have a paypal account, and am totally trustworthy :)

But I would need payment upfront because I give away all my inventions to the world because I amj crap at selling myself.

I'm also happy for anyone else to do the delivery thing, and who ever you are, I trust you completely, and am more than willing to put some cash into your paypal account

For anyone that doesn't have a paypal account, you just sign up, then you can transfer for free an amount of money form one account to another just by entering an amount, and an email address.

It's a pretty good system (free within the same country).
