hello,

I will be building a custom tank and bed out of plywood to fit a particular area off the side of the house. I am considering a plant box about 1.6 x 1 metre. My question is how much produce can I harvest and if it's enough for two, how many fish do you need in the tank that would be the same dimensions and .7 metre high.

If you have ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.

Certainly enough for 2 for a very occasional meal, but you will need a lot more grow beds if you want to supply all your veg from your system. I've got nine 2X1m GBs and it's not enough for all our veg needs for 2 all year, but it does supply a reasonably large proportion.

Well that answers that question with a fair bit of certainty. We're vegetarians so I'm planning on a system that will sustain us year round. Can't accomplish that where we live now that's another certainty so I will have to look at buying something else.

Summer has me worried the fish ponds are going to get too hot as well, they will have to be in the shade or they will reach temperatures too high to sustain the fish.

You know you're hooked when you buy the house for the aquaponics system.

With the fish, the more water you have, the more stable the temp, but there are plenty of species that'll thrive in your weather conditions, barramundi for one.

And I'll agree with gungulla, you need a very big system to grow all your fruit and vegetables, but I haven't had to buy lettuce for over a year now. And we eat a lot of it.
