There is a hatchery in tassie losing quite a few fish at the moment and they suspect its electrocution, i heard from a reliable source today that it has happened there before in the past too. Apparently it caused the dead fish to change colour on one side of spine and go blue down one side. did you see anything like this in your morts? or any changes?

while i am still very sceptical about electricity killing the fish while not setting off circuit breakers or anything i am starting to come around to the idea and consider it plausible.

Also heard its causing moribund fish to swim in spiral corkscrews all in the same way, apparrently something to do with the magnetic field. Also very sceptical.

They are sure looking good.. :-)

Re. The comments on electricity leakage in aquariums, don't forget that a split in encapsulation to a motor or heater, will normally have no current path to ground.. ie.. the tank is on a stand, and it may be that only you can provide the current path to ground when you shove an arm in.. it's the same as when (eg.) A toaster might give you a jolt when you happen to touch the tap whilst also touching the toaster and it could have worked properly for years, until you finally and accidentally provide the curreent path.

Hahaha.

The Ballarat hatchery has been having problems with their Browns. They didn't have many eggs to start with and they have been losing a lot of their fry due to a bacterial infection.

I think it is a semi RAS system.

I know some water is recirculated but not all. I asked if they used salt as a preventative and they said they couldn't due to EPA rules. Formalin and other nasties are fine though.

It is very " interesting " and doesn't always make sense what regulations allow you to add and what not.
And for setups with effluent it will only become harder in the future. Let alone water licensing and so on.

My water is naturally shot to 22 from 19 over 5h. Chiller is on now and I am off to buy30% shade sail.
The young tomato plants are struggling too.

Yes toms do love it warm and my mature ones are standing up alright.
I take cuttings (side shoots ones supposed to take off) and stick them in and grow a new plant.
Works really well. Better then seeds.
The surface of scoria was 47c today after 4hfull sun. Water is 21.2 (one above my set goal without chiller)
So summer prep is starting:)) retractable shade for those early afternoon hours, and evaporation mist over the sump surface on demand or timer should do the trick.
The hottest time of last summer was 3 nights above 30c and top day in the shade 44c!

I was planting more basil seedlings today.
Digging the holes for them my 4yo helper shouted from the other growbed: daddy there is a snake!
To my relive it was a well grown earth worm(ca25cm long) digging a bit more we found another 5.
I never introduced worms to the growbeds and this system is only 6month old.
Now I am asking myself how they got in and how fast do they grow?
