In winter feed the SP things like cheap prawn tails, worms, lettuce, BSF, mealworms etc. they go off the pellets during the colder months but their instincts can't resist some treats which keeps them fattened up ready for a head start when the warmer weather arrives.

Happy to report that my Silver Perch are back on the feed again after a uneventful winter.
I'm feeding them about 3 times a day and they look like they've grown quite a bit in the last several days!

Matt, I like your build a lot well done. Very tidy. I have just got some IBCs and will be copying your system.

Do you think the filters are necessary? I wasn't going to have any filters but 3x 300mm ibc growbeds.

Hey Urrazeb. Cheers. No, in hindsight I don't think the filters are necessary mate.
It all depends on how many fish you want to stock in your system. 3 x 300mm grow beds should give you plenty of filtration for up to 30 to 40 fish.
I got the ideas for adding filters off someone else and later realised they are not needed unless I want to stock more than 30-40 fish.

All the best with your built, I'd be happy to give advise should you need any!

Could I suggest the thought that via a mechanical filter, you can have the best of both worlds.
I understand that one aim is to keep as much solids (any) from the GB so as to keep water flowing, and not create ANY anaerobic areas..

So, depending on the type of mechanical filter, you would keep ALL external solids from the GB and still be able to rinse the filter out and process the remains to extract all nutrients.. that's Win-Win for me..
(provided you are not paying a crazy price for the filter)
..
.

Not really, I don't see a reason at all to keep solids away from the grow beds. Can you tell me why you would want to do this?

I agree with Charlie on this one. It would take an incredible amount of solids to block anything in the system. (Like perhaps a few years or more worth) and providing you have ample aeration in the system, there shouldn't be too much anaerobic activity at all.

I ripped up all the Roma Tomatoes from the F&D Bed last night. I don't think I've quite got enough nutrients from the SP at this stage to maintain such high demand from the Toms. I sprinkled a bunch of Cauliflower and loose leaf Lettuce seeds in a couple of rows, any suggestions as to what else I can plant out at this time of the year?
