I was reading somewhere (maybe cookies thread) that if you add shell grit, it makes a good difference initially then the smaller particles dissolve and your left with less effective grit. He suggested a top up every now and then - something I haven't done for ages and I have closer to 6.0 PH mostly, buffering with lime and woodash daily to weekly when I remember.

Save some seeds as they will be acclimatized for your area. Also try some lateral cuttings straight into the grow bed. I had a tommy toe that grew like a monster - I had his cloned cutting twin last through the later part of the season with ease.

I don't think the U shape version works...

To bottom of the growbed needs to be elbowed across to the top of the fish tank.

Another option could be to have a sump under the growbed thats plumbed at floor level to the fish tank (you could elbow up next to fish tank on the outside and into top - the sump would need to be slightly higher than the fish tank leveling.

Feeding the growbed can go down then up as you are running non-CHIFTPIST.

Doing the sump and horizontal connector would allow the walk through idea in pic 1

Hiya Rocket, what is the height difference between the bottom of the gb and the high water level in the ft?

Hey Rocket, so a height difference of about 130mm. Are you thinking of penetrating the ft wall?
Personally I like to be able to access all sides of the gb so initially I thought going along the ground was a good option however with the height difference it may cause issues. My original BYAP set up drained out into a 90mm pipe riser then across to the ft and up and into the ft much like the first of your pipe work ideas. It was run timed f&d and when I pulled the standpipe it overflowed the 90mm pipe at the gb end. If you were to use all 40mm pipe drain connected all the way to the ft I think you will need a breather pipe on the line rising higher than the gb water level.
Having written this sometimes keeping it simple is the way to go....
;)
