Your on the ball there Ark, what you do is up to you, but I do think the dead fish had the most to play at this situation, now they are removed your levels should slowly get better, your plants will love the extra nitrate levels without the water change!

So no deaths today - given theres only 7 fish left and 2 are pakistani loaches so easy to differentiate, its a good thing.
Ordering more fish

Readings today. PH6.5 Nitrates 40, Nitrites 0, Ammonia 0
so things are hopefully on the improve.

Good for you Ark!
My nitrite levels are 2.0ppm plus but my nitrate is between 0 and 5.0ppm, it’s the ammonia you have to keep an eye on, there is a Rob Bob clip on you tube where he had the same problem as you, unfortunately? The fish that survived died the next year in adverse whether conditions, as they were in some way damaged due to the spike! The more video clips you watch the better advice you can get, reading something’s takes longer and sometimes you don’t get what the person was trying to tell you first up? As the old saying goes a picture paints a thousand words,

All the best!

Both Ammonia and Nitrite are toxic to fish, you really have to keep an eye on both.

I hope that's the end of your bad luck Ark, I'm sure you can't wait to put it all behind you.
Good to see those numbers dropping back now.

Yes you are right in a way but,
If there is ammonia in the system your nitrites aren’t doing their job! A water change could in theory kill off the bacteria with the chlorines in the water? I just added salt to my system as that is what is recommended by some aquaponics sites I visit, it helps the fish cope a bit better was the call, I only have the ten goldfish so I don’t care! For now, but the barra will be here next weekend! And they look delicious, high in omega3,

All water should be dechlorinated/off gassed before being added to a system.

all my top up water sits in 250L barrels for at least a week before using. I try to keep 500L sitting there as a just in case.

So one more update - PH 6.5 - nitrates 40 nitrites 0 ammonia 0
did a 200L water change, and going to do another in a weeks time.

Will also add new fish later this week.

So glad you haven't had any more fish deaths :)

How are the plants recovering? Any more rodent visitors?
I'm sure they will pick up again with the warmer weather on its way, and the new fish on their way too.

Do you have a system thread too? I'd love to check it out.

The rat comes and visits nightly, stands in front of the camera, then buggers off.
It is mocking me, and ignoring the traps.

On the bright side, it has let some of my plants recover, but i need to put some more in soon. I might get some tomatoes started now.
I will be making a bucket trap this weekend.

So 1 dead fish today.
PH has dropped a little down to 6.3 added a half teaspoon of hydrated lime, will test again tomorrow. Nitrates down to 20, no nitrites or ammonia. Other fish seem pretty healthy. Caught this dead one pretty quickly, was watching on my fishcam. With salt at over 3ppt i dont want to add anymore, I guess I will just cross my fingers and keep my eye on things.

So two more weeks, no deaths.
Added a rather large air pump (38L per minute)

Struggling to get the ph higher than 6.4

Nitrates around the 50 level constantly, ammonia and nitrites nil.
Fish seem happy.
