Sh*t....
It could actually be chlorine.... I forgot I did a reasonable top up the other day after a hose leak. Far out, I must test the water as soon as I get home. Assuming he's still alive!

No water test as I was caught up doing mummy stuff tonight. The severe storms we have had in the past 24 hours have stirred up the water a fair bit, and also added quite a bit of rainwater. I'm hoping the newly cleaned filter will grab some of that gunk over the next day or so. "The King" looked slightly improved during the brief period I was out there, but it was quite dark even with all the outside lights on.
It will be an early morning tomorrow for me! Will mix up some salt, do a water test and see how they are all looking. No food for now - hard to explain to a 6 yr old though :-/
Oh and one of the foster dogs is off to the vet tomorrow morning too, just to add to my list. He will not be a happy chappy when I go pick him up...

That's good, Stuart: on that basis it's probably not Ebola, either!

Your system is coming along really well, katmac. This is a fun thread to follow.

Thanks Peter, I am enjoying my new obsession immensely :)

Eeeep, don't even mention Ebola - I'm absolutely terrified by some of the things I've read lately. Thank goodness I don't have a TV (not a hippy - just slow to adjust to the non-analog world ;-))

I am absolutely ITCHING to get some Silver Perch - besides Lucky - into the pond, but I'd say I'm at least a month away if I want to play it safe. Perhaps I will buy a few bigger ones to put in there as well, to sooner satisfy my desires for an AP fish dinner!

:headbang: The King is NOT dead! :headbang:

I've forgotten the parameters, but will test again tonight. They were much better though.

Tonight I am going to start some more tomatoes too.

My basil seedlings are going well. The lettuce was not so flash though.
Meh, I will try some more straight into a pot instead of the tray and just water them from the AP system (it counts!).

I am also going to prep the soil in my raised garden beds to get them ready for planting.
I think I will let my mini pumpkins and spaghetti squash take over one, and grow some more lettuce and Asian greens in there while the vines are still small. The other one will be just pretty things.

On a slightly unrelated note... I know Zucchini flowers are good for stuffing, but I've seen people use lots of other similar flowers too (different squash etc). Can anyone tell me their opinion on the best flowers to stuff? and the best recipe? :flower:

I've only really used the zucchini flowers. But a pumpkin and ricotta mix, with a light batter comes out well :)

Ok... Looks like the ammonia spike is working it's way through the cycle.

pH: 7.2
Amm: 0
Ites: 4-5
Ates: approx 1 bajillion

I think I might have to at the very least pop some floating baskets in there to take advantage of the nitrates.
I have a bucketload of polystyrene sheets thanks to an ikea build, so perhaps I shall build one!
What's the worst that could happen? :-D

Thanks Colum - I shall give it a go! I've never tried them, but they look delicious and I've always wanted to test them out.

Needs more foam. The water level in the basket is too high, but they are only seedlings, so I will make some temporary booster floats out of the leftover foam and experiment until I get it right. Until then it won't hurt them to be a bit wet.

I'm just glad it didn't sink instantly!

Gravel is mucho destructive to soft, wet fingernails by the way. People will think I have some weird deficiency :-/
