Hi same for me -I started two years ago wicking tomatoes then saw You- Tube and the mentioning of aquaponics -so I had the leylandii trees cut down by the side of the garage,we had a dip in the garden -needed eight tons of sub soil to correct the levels ,had a path made then on to the greenhouse ,I found making the AP system very interesting -the things that catch you out when buying pipe- it's easy to buy quick fit pipe- to find you have bought weld fit by a mistake etc- making the system fail proof ,I had the water overflow( lost fifty gallons of water) simply a friend of mine insisted every thing could go throught the filter -it took me two days to sort the pipework out .Well I have the lights installed ,at least I am not growing ten feet lettuce-or I hope not .Cheers

Nope - not in Australia - they are farmed in cold areas and die in summer in most AP systems due to temps

In the US, it varies depending on region. Here in San Diego, keeping trout is illegal. Or at least it requires heavy permitting. Catfish are also prohibited here. Mostly it is to prevent diseases from spreading to the native population of salmonids and catfish. Conversely, tilapia are now considered "native" and are perfectly alright here. Every state is going to have different regulations. Even within a state the regulations will be different according to the region.

Picture shows the trees surrounding the greenhouse ,plan to get grow lights .The N.F.T system I modified showing pipe reducers which act as a baffler to raise water in pipe .I noticed other people use small tubes -not sure whether they are for oxygen or water ?haven't found much in the way of instruction s building W F T systems ..next project is to build small extension on workshop to house the AP system I bought last year and incorporate in to the new system :support:

When making D W T system I keep the pipes flat allowing water to flow evenly through pipes ,later on will put air pipe into system to increase oxygen added a Belkin battery surge protector that gives me about three hours if electricity fails to run the water pump. Having plant pests in greenhouse .so to find solutions to control problem -any ideas ? picture shows work shop in a bit of a mess

Hi I am glad to be back-suffered jet lag for the first week then had a bad chest infection, but I enjoyed the trip seeing grandchildren although it rained for the first two weeks but did manage to do some sight seeing. Back to the aquaponics -have started to fix up the original A.P system ,needs a new syphon -so I shall strip everything down and start again ,shall make a wooden frame- insulate -then cycle the system .

Hi. thank you for helping me . I have a smaller 300 litre system already running ,and plan to use the hydroton stones out of that ,also the fish water ,-how much advantage would that be in terms of recycling ,could I use two grow beds simultaneously to recycle ?,where it is usually one grow bed at a time .The smaller 300 litre system ,there is something wrong with the syphon ,I bought this system last year ,I plan to leave the existing stand pipe this will make an emergency over flow pipe ,then install a new syphon ,project later on in the year. I bought this from a gardening centre second hand ,,rather interestingly ,I was told it took an expert two hours to set up the syphon ,something wrong, about that? I shall take this thing apart and find the fault ,I know they used earth in with the hydroton stones ,might be a blockage in the pipe ,
This is the system I plan to change -new syphon -insulate then recycle

hi concerning the original syphon there was no pipe from the bottom- whether it was supposed to be like that I don't know ,decided to replace with affon syphon -the media guard has plenty of slots allowing water through .Have been painting fence for the last three days -has been quite hard work ,hope to finish by the weekend then start to build the stand for the original system .Asking a question can you make up your own sprays to kill off plant bugs- example garlic, peppers etc. ? Concerning the system in greenhouse -I shall get the work done then concentrate on growing veg for winter.Everything is OK with the system I made last year ,before going on holiday i planted rye grass to maintain bacteria system- this plant grows very quickly -puts down long roots very quickly to absorb nutrients worked quite well .How is the school ?/?system going ?

I made one with chilli and garlic - works okay for aphids.

School system is going great! I haven't taken any recent photo's but we are still cladding the outside with pallet wood and have started the fish tank lid.

There are now 50 trout in there and the students have made a start on their systems.

Thanks for your help btw :)
