You will need to start a portfolio to document your journey.
Draft 1 is due today via LEARNING TASKS

1. Today we will dicuss the nitrogen cycle. Look at IBCofaquaponics.pdf page 178 if you like, but also research on youtube and google. You will need to put key points into your portfolio as well as pictures.

2. We will look at PH and nutrients that plants need. page 185. You will need to document what causes changes in PH and how to change PH in your system. We will also look at the different nutrients there are and how they effect plants.

3. We will be designing our system and making a cost and price spreadsheet. You will need to research this on IBCofaquaponics or ask Mr Birchall for help. You can use bunnings price lists if you like. You will need to draw a simple design by hand or use google sketchup.

4. Sign up to http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum and start a thread in the members section.

5. Planting plants in poly tunnel on heatmat

6. Deconstructing pallets and wood for sides of School system

7. Planning our next excursion (trout farm) and beyond.

2 new members Jaxon3 & LachieMC - students :)

Today we studied the nitrogen cycle, PH and started to design and cost our systems.

We then headed over to the poly tunnel and ...

1. Deconstructed a pallet with tools
2. Cut some pipe with a saw
3. drilled a hole for a uniseal with a holesaw and battery drill
4. planted plants (this was really successful) - the students raided my heritage seed packets :)
5. tested the water for nitrites, ammonia and pH

We have 3 groups with some real progress
2 x barrel systems
1x IBC system.

Parts and price list was sorted with these groups today

Don't you love student language - so simple :)
Quote:
The fish eat then they poo
Ammonia(poo) and Bactria(that’s in the water) react together and form nitrogen
Nitrite kills fish
You have to clean your fish tank often

Have to correct him on that last bit ....

Looking awesome! Great stuff teaching a new generation some interesting ways of producing produce! Though maybe you'll also be responsible for some more aquaponic addictions.... Can't decide if I wish I learnt about this earlier or not, I have moved a lot and can see myself moving aquaponics a lot ahaha

I like the idea for the twisting reducers! Saves a fortune on the valves.

Are the students responding?
