So my goldfish seem fine, they haven't exhibited any problems feeding, and I haven't had any deaths in a long time, but they look kinda strange. Their stomachs on the bottom, near the back end are getting kinda big, they look almost as if they are pregnant. I have no what this could be caused by and what it means. Any ideas or even guesses?

Thanks

Depends on the goldfish. There are many different types of them. Some have fat bodies, some have eyes that look like they are popping out. Many different types.

But when they are about to breed, the females will swell up around their stomachs, preparing to drop their eggs.

Goldfish don't have stomachs they have an enlarged foregut. :)

They are a number of things it could be but if I was you I would introduce more greens in their diet to avoid constipation, my favourite is frozen baby peas, microwaved until the are warm and then squeeze them out of their shells also duckweed if you can get it.
If they are pregnant you could make some simple spawning mops, that is if you do want baby goldfish.

Noticed the same thing today with some of mine, I got the Heinz variety goldfish, some with big eyes some orange some white with spots, they were very skittish when I first got them and went off their feed a bit, but now they come back for seconds! But the water temp has come up a little in the tanks to 18c today, so it could mean they are just happy with all that water,

If you are thawing them and squeezing them out, any pea will do. they dont have to be baby peas.

Yes but I always eat some when I'm doing it and I prefer baby peas (also they seem softer) :)

Kij2 I am not sure about in Jordan but we can get frozen peas only but yes the frozen ones with carrots would do.

Hey Sleepe, you pick up on the use of the term stomach rather than enlarged foregut but then you refer to Goldfish being pregnant! Goldfish may be ripe with eggs or ready to spawn but they don't get pregnant since fertilisation of their eggs occurs outside of their bodies.

A bit of consistency please Mr Sleepe!

Fair call PLJ; but the fact that they don't have a stomach is important in terms of digestion of food.

And I did say spawning mops, not an excuse but. :)

I am not a Mr Sleepe, my old car was, I am David (not that I can ever get anyone to call me that) its always Dave or Davo.

No problemo, David. I'm just being a smart arse.

Goldfish often spawn in late winter to spring, typically after heavy rainfall (or pumping) partially flushes the body of water in which they reside. kij2, where are you in relation to the seasons up there in Jordan? Maybe your fish are in pre-spawning mode.
