Anyone in the uk keep ornamental koi in their system? I am considering growing on some little koi and selling them when they get to a foot or so, either back to the shop or to a koi person. Just looking at the registration guidelines, you have to fill out a different form if you are selling the fish, but it seems to only be if you are selling them to eat, as you don't have to register at all if you are only keeping ornamentals. I just want to check if my understanding is correct there, would I need the r something form or the a one? Thanks for any help.

Hi Katali,

I have koi's for my fish in my aquaponics system.

I have a video of them on this link: http://hmonghot.com/QU9rSGpRSnR0eGcz.

though I am not selling them but they do fine in Aquaponics.

Hope that helps.

From everything I read I'd think they'd be perfect for ap, except for the not eating part!

SOunds more like it, I havent heard anyone trying to eat them but they are perfect for AP. Fast and big eaters sells at decent price if you manage to get good patters and good lineage.

:D

Lets say somewhere between 25-35 cm, and ornamental koi.

There are many different types of ornamental koi, but lets say on average £70-£100. Having bought them for £3-£5 at about 3cm? I don't know how long it would take to grow them out, or how much food.

My Current setup is with Koi's I have and so far my experience says from 2-3 inches they can grow to 6-10 inches in a span of 4 months.

I use Aquamaster mized with regular petshop/Vet supply grade food.

Aquamaster is alot more costly than that of the regular vet supply food.

I am in the Philippines so I won't really know what the price range is but aquamaster cost $6/Kilo and regular vet grade koifood is at $1-2/kilo.

Works well for me.

I have a video of my Koi's in youtube in case you wanna see them feed.

Just look for me markjune.ferniz that's my channel name.

How many kilos do they get through in that time, and how many fish?

I honestly haven'e weighed any of them using a formal weighing scale but when I transferred them the last time my largest one would be approximately 2 kilos or even more but less than 3.

If you are into KOIS you would want to consider their body shape, proportion, color, skin/scale appearance and condition and vigor may be. Weight is the least of your worries on that.

Moreover, I feed 2-3 times a day depending on the weather, they eat less during the cold days.

I managed to grow kois from 6 inches to a foot to 15 inches in 6 months.

An advise that I took and I would like to also tell you would be the size of the tank. I started with 269G's and they grew it out in 4 months with no problem.

One thing is water should be at least 24-36 inches deep, width of tank should at a least a meter (3.3 feet wide and should be long as well, they tend to jump off the tank if its small and crowded.

My current tank specs: L= 8' w = 4' H= 4'
Kois = 14 heads mixed sizes
Goldfish = 4 varying sizes

the sticking density I have is actually over the capacity of my tank but filtration has to be the key, I clear muck from my filters every 3 days.

Hope this helps :)

I'm planning to use ibcs as they are the cheapest thing, so they are a metre cubed. I meant how many kilos of food do they eat in that time? Just trying to get an idea of how much the fish food will cost. I know they will grow out of the tank, I'm hoping to be able to sell them back to a koi shop when they get too big, and getting another crop of little ones. That would be the plan if I went with koi.

For the last ten months, I have used 5 kilograms of aquamaster and 5 kilograms of regular fishfood.

Thanks for all the info kidmmafia, I checked out your youtube channel. I think Koi would be fun to have in my system, unfortunately I don't have much time to visit my system and enjoy the fish.

I'm thinking of it in a pure economic sense.
