Ok, first, I wish it to be clearly understood that I am in major envy of the fish choices the us and australia have, but I don't have them here, so please don't wax lyrical about your jade and silver perch *sob *

I can get (from a local shop) carp, tench, orfe and rudd. (Not interested in tilapia, can't heat them.) I would like trout, but the closest I can get them from is an hour journey each way, and I'm going to be having not as much flow as I would like through the tank, I understand trout like a lot of current.

So of those readily available....will they live together, would any of them breed, which is best for eating etc? Which would you recommend?

Trout don't need heaps of current flow (they they may taste better for the exercise!), just a good DO level.

I'm actually envious of you being able to have carp in the UK. I think carp have the potential for running a good low energy, robust system that can utilize veg food supplementation. Silver Perch ain't all that flash!! have you thought about eels?

Carp make a good choice, they are basically pigs with fins and do well in AP,plus because of the clean water they taste ok,or how about Koi fingerlings grow them on and then sell them, not sure on the availability in the UK but a googly search will show anything up.

Thanks, am looking into koi now, my husband has suggested that as well. If I can get them from a £5 fish to a £100 fish in a year, and can stock enough of them, then I can buy a second polytunnel! What are the chances? (No really, I'm asking...)

They are very pretty fish, I might fall in love with them. But I figure I can get new ones next time and do the same :) I'm not going to havespace for many, so if I want to experience different patterns that seems a good way to go!
