Hello
Were new on this site. have been raising koi for years, decided to change to aquaponics. Our plan is to use our pond (6000 gallon) and three (300 gallon) for plants. waiting on a call back from fish and game now, because i have read so many restrictions, there is no open water where I live. Is there anyone close too us doing aquaphonics? here in Kern county? any commnications would be great.

Ronmaggi,
Fish and game just told me I am in Northern Cali ? and they are sending me a list of what i can have, and what I cant. I wanted to do tilapia. and she said no.
So 90 miles south of me I can do it? there is no open water where I live.

Last I heard we are the northern most city in southern California. Also if you live on the east side of county line road you are in San Bernardino county which allows Tilapia.

Don't feel like tilapia is the only fish for Aquaponics. In fact, from what I understand, it gets quite cold there, which means heating in the winter. Ask your DFG lady what gets stocked in nearby lakes. It will be well adapted for your climate.

We're close to Inyokern, I am redoing my pond, that has been stocked with koi for over 15 years. What fish are you going to use in your system?

Fish and game said to consult the local biologist, that they recommend. Still waiting on the email. She also said I need a fish stocking license ($60.00) and should buy my fish from approved and licensed stockers. I don't think there are any close to us. And would like to buy fish from my area.

Been considering:
Catfish
Bass
Crappie
Blue gill
Craw dads
Crayfish
And some kind of fresh water fish.
Tilapia, would be seasonal until we heat the system (solar or heat transfer)

We're planing to use gold fish to get the system started then when I fell comfortable we wanted to use silver tilapia. They seemed like the best choice for our extream climate changes we have. But we have concerned about this law, so we are going to have a second IBC fish tank that we can switch trout and bass according to the season.

I understand that tilapia isn't the only fish that would work for aquaponics, I just think its a hardy fish that could live up to the abuse from a rookie like me. Our tempetures can range from 35F (winter nights) to 115 (summer days). That's why i'm putting up a greenhouse to help get through the winter. Still trying to figure out the summer. So far shade cloth and a deep sump tank is my only idea.

STARKY,

Why in the world would you ever ask the government for "permission" to feed
your family.

All they will do is tell you to ask some other agency,..... and pay $60 as you walk out the door.
Then OSHA will show up and fine you $1500 for having wet floors under your grow beds.

You need 6 month of inspection before you can pick a strawberry.

Unless you want to go full scale commercial, Don't tell.

Even this forum is a risk you take. Everything you type is recorded FOREVER.

And yes, by saying this, I open myself to the same things that I am warning about.
Check the new laws, Obama has done an "Executive Order" making home gardens illegal.

Do your thing, and enjoy your life. But in the last year there is 4 tons of new
laws that prevent you from surviving.

Don't ask, Don't tell....Daucie

Ya been catching the same drift, it must be the brain fart Boy Scout in me. Should have never asked fish and game, less than 20 miles away you can have tilapia, there is no water where I live, and the aqueduct is under ground here too. I am like a fish out of water.

Nothing wrong with asking permission. Besides having to pay the admin fee, you may well learn more about what is likely to grow well in your area, and the reasoning behind restrictions.
I live in Western Australia and we have amazingly strict quarantine laws, but I'm happy to abide by them because we have a fairly pristine natural environment, free from many pests and diseases that plague other countries, and even other states in Australia.
Having said that, common sense should always prevail. If you apply common sense and a degree of respect for your environment to your plans, I'm sure you won't go too far wrong :-)
Good luck with it all!
