Hi All,
I recently moved to Weipa from NSW, where I used to have a veggie garden. I heard of aquaponics a long time ago but never really had a need for it. Now I live in Cape York and the veggies we get at woollies are far from fresh. The ground is full of nematodes so it's time to give this a crack. Have a quick research I think I might got down the IBTaquaponics pathway unless someone has a better idea. I should be able to get some fish from the local lakes with a cast net, and/or some cherubim and red claw.

Take care,

Tom

Hi Barndillo, hope your AP adventure goes well for you and welcome to the forum. :wave1:
I wouldn't advise using a cast net in freshwater though, can get you in all sorts of trouble.
This forum is almost certainly read by people involved in fisheries and cast nets are definitely only permitted to be used in tidal waters in QLD. :)
Thought I'd give you a heads up since you're new to the state, I don't mean to be a downer at all, just trying to keep your equipment and bank account safe from confiscations and fines.
Nothing stopping you using bait traps or line catching fish for AP though. (I have a few line caught bream running my system at the moment).
There are regs about what traps are legal and legal size/bag limits still apply too of course.
I have some friends who have or do live up at Weipa and they would definitely agree with your opinion of the available produce in shops. AP should be a great addition for you, keep us all in the loop with how you go!

Look forward to seeing your system. Have you got much space for a big system or going to start small

I'm only new to Queensland, cast nets too for that matter. Didn't know they were illegal to use in freshwater, thanks for the heads up. I know chasing cherubim at Archer river I got lots of fish in my yabbie trap, might try that tactic once I'm setup.

Hi Mantha, not heaps of space and in a rental so don't want to establish too much, I think a single IBC setup with GB on top will be a good arrangement.
Do people in the tropics have success using shaded locations or does the grow bed need full sun?

New high-set in Golf Links. Another idea was to put the fish pond under the house and grow beds in full sun.
