What is up with kids these days, my daughter likes broccoli too... Back when I was a kid, we staunchly refused to eat it, and put up with the starving kids in China stories!

Me too!
Maybe it's because we've stopped feeding it to them as a khaki-brown, limp mush tree :)
That's how I remember getting it as a kid anyway.
This next generation don't know how good they've got it ;)

Sooo....

I have my Oma's (grandmother's) 80th birthday party this Sunday and Mum tells me that it will be a hot lunch at her place.
I've decided this is a perfect time for me to pick up a few plate-sized Silver Perch (from Golden Ponds since they're quite literally just down the road from me) to test out on the extended family.

I'll probably keep it pretty basic and either BBQ or bake them with some lemon and herbs so that we can taste the flavour of the actual flesh. Has anyone bought fish for eating from Golden Ponds before? I'm really hoping they're not kept 'Chinese Restaurant-Style' in a display tank, because that's always guaranteed to taste like Aquarium - will be hard to sell the little bloke on that!

Hi Katmac

Golden Ponds doesn't particularly have a good name - see link below.

I have personally bought fingerlings (SP & trout) from them in the past - successfull but expensive. Currently Troutman is my preferred supplier.

If you get some fish for eating - please post the results!

Yep I can imagine, it's been a few years since I've been there so will be interesting to see how it's set up now.

Unfortunately even the convenience being 5 minutes down the road is not enough to convince me to pay $6 for SP fingerlings!!!

I thought Troutman was out of fingerlings for now so I was going to get some from Gidgegannup, but I will check his site first. Looking forward to getting some trout next year, it's a shame I wasn't organized sooner this year.

I went to BYAP/Cheidy's today and showed my son the types of fish we will be getting. He was quite impressed with the Trout, and the sheer size of the SP in their tanks.

We bought some food for the koi and goldfish we assumed would be hungry and over their stressful move last week. They don't like eating when we're watching, but camping out patiently on the trampoline proved they were indeed eating at least. Not as much fun to watch as the trout though!

Tomorrow morning I'm picking up the Perch from GP, so I'll be in picture mode all day, between that and trying to catch the trout stripping at the Food and Wine Show.

No wonder Charlie wants to see pics... Sounds like a fun show.

Grrr....
There go my plans for the food and wine show :(
Flat battery in the car, and no small amount of dicking around to replace it...

Sorry Troutman, hopefully someone else will make it up there for the strippers ;)

So, massively behind schedule I've now picked up 3 SP from Golden Ponds.

The first one in the bag was a reasonable size, however the two that followed him are puny. I dunno how worthwhile eating them will be?

So for now they are in the 100L bucket of death. I am contemplating chucking one of the small ones in the pond. The other small one looks to have sustained a few injuries during capture and I obviously want to eat the big one. What do you guys think? Pics to follow as soon as I get reception.

Well, Lucky is on the pond and his two mates are in my bucket ready to go in the oven.

By the way, they were indeed in a display tank so I'm not holding my breath for anything amazing taste-wise. We'll see...

Just like chicken.

There were heaps of them there. And plenty of tourists too amazingly. Tourists taste more like pork...

Well, I would imagine the tourists would take on the taste of the feed they were brought up on....

None too shabby, even if one was a bit small. Will be interesting to see how Lucky's going when we get home.

Surprisingly there wasn't too much "tank taste" in them, and I'm pretty positive about how they'll go in the AP system :)
