-20 something, that's be fun to imagine. I'm in the middle of winter at the moment, and it's 8C outside at the moment, 6C overnight.

Although, I'd love to see snow.

Sorry i can't help with your question, never tried with strawberries through snow. It sounds like they hibernate when it gets too cold, if you keep your GB's full, you might get lucky. Or the frozen water might expand and crush the roots. :dontknow:

You easily have one of the more gorgeous looking systems around! Good job. I believe you are making many on this forum jealous, including myself.

Now my 2 cents on pH:

In my personal opinion you should never worry about dropping your pH in aquaponics even at an 8.2. So long as your feeding enough and you have proper areas for nitrification as well as denitrification to occur. You should be capable of fairly decent growth within your plants even at this high of a pH. Now, this growth will take time to come by. It really wont just happen over night after a system is built. Usually takes upwards of 3-6 months to really have your system fully stabilized and cranking out good loads of nitrates as well as the other micro nutrients that you want to see. After these first few months of operation, your nitrifying bacteria will have hopefully fully colonized your system. At this point they will be turning the ammonia/nitrite over to nitrate so efficiently that they will be producing enough acid within this oxidation reaction to actually make your pH drop. Depending upon how hard your top up water is your pH could actually drop over night far below 7. This large drop can occur due to the fact that these acids eat up all the carbonates within the water thus reducing the buffering capability of your water and in turn creating a less stable system. This is where you will want to start adding potassium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. I use the carbonates to raise pH because this helps buffer your system from large pH swings. Many out there use hydroxides for this (I use to go that route myself). However, if you are raising your pH with potassium/calcium hydroxide you will find that you very well may have to be adding it daily because your system has no buffering capacity to hold the pH.

Salting for Nitrite spikes:

Your fish will be much happier yes. However, you really do not want these salts in your system. I prefer cycling with fish myself but rarely use salt to mitigate for nitrite toxicity unless 100% required. Your comets should be able to tolerate it for the most part. Other things you can do are water changes as well as just increasing aeration to there tank if a spike occurs.

Iron additions:

Your system is very new and has very little nitrate cycling through it. I believe you have a nitrogen deficiency not an iron deficiency but thats just my personal guess.

I apologize for the mini book! haha I just got excited and want to help and see your system succeed!

Wow thanks very much!

No need to apologize! I appreciate the advice from everyone. I just get excited, looking at it everyday. I'm going to be away on vacation the middle of next week, but I will be thinking about this stuff the whole time though.

Lol yeah, the novelty wears off pretty quickly! Don't get me wrong the snow is pretty to look at, but when you have to shovel it, it looses it's appeal pretty quick. Last winter was pretty bad, it got down to -30 and we had a big ice storm that went through, just before Christmas. We had no power for 6 days! We weren't too bad, we have a gas fireplace and bought a generator just when the freezing rain started. Fun and games!

Well, when I got home today, I took a water sample. Not cycled yet, but I think it's doing ok. I have to remember patience :)

I also managed to get some staining done. I had to do all the high stuff, a lot of climbing, but had to be done.

Thanks! I have completed the first coat of stain on the green house today, also I finished trimming out the second GB. I plan on staining the GB's, FT and sump a different colour.

My bulkhead has finally come in for my second GB, unfortunately I'm going away for another week, so I can't work on it

These guys are growing very slowly, but I guess that's because there are no nitrates in the water.

I doubt nutrients is causing slow germination. seeds have stored up nutrients/energy in the form of starch. they just need water to germinate. usually fpr best results a little bit acidic water.

Some seeds like lettuces germinate in 24 hours and some like peppers can take two weeks.

Well it's been a long time, managed to get the plastic on the greenhouse for the winter. I don't have anything running right now, it's too cold! Maybe next year I will try and get to run through out the winter we will see.

I didn't get a lot out of it this year, it was too late in the season and I only had 2 fish. I didn't want to get too many that late in the season.

I'm thinking now about getting tilapia, but I will have to heat the water, especially in the spring and fall. Of course if I go that route, I won't be running it in the winter.

I have ordered 2 500W aquarium heaters from China, I hope that will be enough to keep the water warm enough.

One question I have is; will I have to cycle the water again in the spring?

I'd imagine it needs to be cycled again. Frozen over and all.

Can you get trout there? I'd imagine they'd be perfect for your conditions? Tilapia sound painful with the temperature you need to maintain.

I can get trout, but I have the opposite problem, I will have to keep the water cool. Once we get into early summer we can get temperatures of 30°

I had planned on getting trout, so I keep going back and forth, not sure what to do. I do know of someone, friend of a friend, that uses tilapia.
