with my small system I currently have a DYI bio-filter in the fish-water, made of a 7x9x4h tupperware which I know is probably not ideal over time (or is it? wouldnt imagine it being UV proof for extended period). I have been looking for a similarly sized UV-resistant box. I dont really want the expense of buying a "real" filter at this time if possible, and current setup and available room makes in-water my best option. any ideas?

just off the top of my head, perhaps an outdoor electrical box or similar, the sort for placing powerboards into.
not sure how food grade it is, but it may not matter too much.

actually I kinda figured out my own problem. (1) I realized I dont need a "true" bio-filter as the "bio" part will be/should be mainly happening in the growbed. and (2) I have the UV container on hand already - PVC tubing!!!

I have a length of 3" PVC 12-15" length. get two endcaps. drill many small holes on one side for the input, drill two holes on other end for my PVC-barb connectors. one output for my FT water movement pump, and the other for the 2nd pump for rise to my GB. fill with cotton or filter pads or something, and possibly very small number of bio-balls, and it will serve as more of a solids filter.

and BTW - the GB is layered with lava-rock on bottom 1-2" and clay balls on top 5-6"
