At that size, without going to any expense, just cook up an old boot and I think you'd have some idea.

What an entertaining [and informative] thread! Been looking at chickens and rabbits, but GPs are looking viable now as well; maybe even more-so as they appear to free range better, and have tougher stomachs than rabbits. Wife and kids love shooting squirrels with the .22LR. They make me field dress them, but, appreciate where meat comes from and love squirrel stew. Bookmarked!

Go for it I say! I just purchased a few Quail just over a week ago and will be breeding them when they start laying, both for meat and eggs. Once I have that system set up I'll be buying a breeding pair of Guinea Pigs for meat.

It could be if its one of the fancier breeds.
A pet shop in melb is selling fancy ones for $65-$68.
Not too hard to make your investment back.

Depends how you look at it Charlie , $20 a pop sounds very profitable to me. 1 Male G.P could serve 4-10 females giving up to 15 baby pigs/female annually x 10 = 150 piglets x $20 = $3000  best case potential..... :headbang:

tongue in cheek maybe but alittle unfair comparison. Your camparison is like comparing juicy baby beef to some old micky bull running out in the scrub somewhere...actually they are the same breed , more like comparing a vicuana to Bactrian camel perhaps :)

Good point Matty, 150 little piggies would also be a few meals

I think $3k is a bit much. 150GP @ 0.5kg ea would be 75kg of meat @ $20/kg (if it is really tasty) would come to $1500.
