Fisheries knocked it on the head, it took them 14 months to get back to me with a 1/2 page letter stating that the risks of translocation outweighed the benefits of allowing them to be in WA.

Offer still stands Troutman (and we may get a few more onboard). Not on an open forum though. :)

I think its a waste of time Sleepe, there are just to many against any new species of fish being permitted in WA. My application was referred to other govt depts like Water, EPA, DEC etc and all objected to it. You also have a small but very vocal group (largely based at Murdoch Uni) that is very anti any introduced fish being permitted into WA at all. The recreational fishing groups lobbied for years to allow some of the eastern states natives to be stocked into selected waters and they to were not allowed and they are a far larger group than the aquaponic enthusiasts. The way Fisheries see it that if they were to give approval to any new species for use in aquaponics it will automatically appear in some local water ways and unfortunately going on whats occurred in the past they are probably right.

I went to Golden Ponds on Friday last week and was told by them that I don't need to complete a translocation form to purchase the trout and perch I got that day.
Today I called the DOF and was told by a friendly lady that I do still need to complete the form, but because the fish I was getting are on their "white list", I could complete the simplified, automated translocation form, site address below. The form was easy to complete, (the address details could be simplified further if a tick box was inserted for when the postal address is the same as the receiving address for the fish)

Thats the simplified version? :)

I like point 5

Quote:
5. At least 24prior to translocation of the fish the Department of Fisheries is notified in writing of the date, time and place of collection, the receiving property and the species, life-stage, quantity, source, and mode of transport of the fish to the receiving facility:

a. by phone on 9482 7251; or
b. by email to translocation@fish.wa.gov.au

:?

Meanwhile people just ring interstate suppliers and have fish sent to them from interstate without any checks. :dontknow:

They need to regulate suppliers, not end consumers, it just doesn't work......!

True dat. Doesn't do the honest fish suppliers any good, you can jump online and buy cheap fingerlings and get them delivered to your door, no questions asked. Absolutely ridiculous.

All the suppliers in Perth will tell you that, from what I have been told some are even telling people that you only need to complete the form if you buy from actual fish farms. Many of the on-sellers are not even licensed to sell fish so the last thing they are going to do is tell you to notify fisheries that you are purchasing fish from them.

I agree but when I have mentioned this to fisheries they tell me its not up to me to police fisheries regulations.

And why is it that aquaculture is the only primary protein production that has a department specifically set up to police it?

Anyone can sell a sheep or goat or cow for meat without being threatened with huge fines and jail time... :dontknow:

I know someone who farms beef for a living, he doesn't need licenses, he doesn't need to explain where his cows come from or go to... :dontknow:

Id assume it has something to do with preserving the waterways and its species. But then they go and stock trout in waterways themselves anyway.

Actually after speaking to my mate, I got it a bit wrong... They do track livestock movements to an extent, but this is to stop theft.

Sorry Joel if your friend is farming beef in WA he must be making his living on Cash basis.
I sell livestock , my property is registered, have a property identificion code , registered brand, tattoo's and earmarks. I'm registered as the owner and the person responsible for the raising care and transport of ANY livestock produced or refattened on my own property , leased country or sold on my ABN. I have to prove where All animals have originated from wether home bred , bought in, even account for how many have died. Transport of animals are covered by a waybill (legal doc signed by all parties owner, buyer, driver of the transport vehicle and kept for 7 years) in triplicate. There are substanstial fines in place for not following procedures. The ag dept , health dept and what was the Stock Squad now just the police and the transport dept are some of the regulating aurthorities involved. Not to forget RSPCA holds considerable sway. Here's a link to SOME of the regulations. http://archive.agric.wa.gov.au/objtwr/i ... eet_03.pdf
I can sell live animals to who-ever on the property, meat no way. The transport of any animal must be accompanied with a waybill, even my own animals by me , from 1 property to another. Of course how you follow these rules is up to the individual
Your friend is certainly not selling to a butcher or abbottiour unless for cash

I feel a simple registar is all that be needed for keeping fish.
Registered fishkeeper with fisheries
Registered fish supplier
Simple notification of intent to keep , grow-out , consume approved fish species

Cheers

Yes and more importantly bio-security.

It is a simple process. Once you have all the bits in place( Property Identification Code , Registered owner of a registered stock brand) its basically self reporting and record keeping and quite unobtrusive. It's more so when something goes wrong the authorities have something to work on. No big deal , every-one involved knows whats required and just does it. But like all these things there are ways around it.
