When we had heaps (30-50) free rangeing I was tempted .... bloody quik little buggers...and bloody cute
I think they are a better option than rabbits . When we kept meat rabbits calici and myxo was a pain in the bum for a backyard do ( we're in a rural area). With a green pick and supplementary grain G.P would go 500gm pretty easy.
Breeding boxes and grow out mobile pens (tractors) on green grass would be ideal
From experience any predator will have a go at them...the obvious ones ..cats , dogs , foxs and eagles falcons hawks, crows and snakes and my favourite...race horse goannas they are cool and mean and they mean business . If you have those guys around chicken wire ain't gonna cut it

Would be just another part in the cycle grow beds growing greens to feed the guinea> guinea carcase (spelling) to the black soldier fly to the fish to the veg

When I think free range poultry farming and tractor I think of the machine that moves the pen/box.

Does your use of the word tractor refer to the pen or the machine that moves it?

of course if you built one big enough you could use a real tractor to shift if you really want but I couldn't eat that many G.Ps

Those would be a perfect GP tractor..... if they werent so damn EXPENSIVE!!

I was talking to a poultry consultant about a "real" (his word) "not hippy" (my words) free range operation where the houses required a tractor to move them (they weighed several tonnes each).

I would have just called those pens...pens. With wheels.

This term is not my own , is used extensively and is historicaly accepted by most other groups. Even your poultry expert should be familiar with it regardless of what scale enterprise he/she busy themselves with . Do a google search and see what you come with. Even Wiki will help you

If I build 2 grow out tractors as grazing pens separating boars and sows, is eating lawn grass enough to meet their dietary requirements or will they still need grassy hay and pellets for supplement nutrition?

Supplementry being the key word , dry matter / roughage (hay) is probably more correct
