Its a rat for crying out loud.

The fact that its grey white or pink doesn't make any difference.

Its the taste that matters.

I guess more to the point, they just look ferrel and mangy. I'd be more inclined to eat a rat from the pet store than to munch on one of those shabby things!

Have a look at these. They are a delicatessen in Africa. Unfortunately I never had an opportunity to taste them but apparently they have a strong gamey taste.

These ones look alright. I'd give that I crack.

I'll ask my Dad. He has spent a fair bit of time in Africa.

Well, that's a bit bigger than the ones in the back yard but I think some of mine might be the ones used for Escargot :) . Escargot's not bad - I had it once, just not certain I could get around to eating the ones around here after having to get rid of so many just to have a crop. Heck there are 3 right now eating the duckweed out of the fish tank, that are the right size :eat:

Don't think very many people keep these as pets either :D

If you do eat your backyard ones, you have to make sure you purge them first. My grandmother used to put them in a bucket with flour and various herbs for a couple of weeks but other people just use herbs on their own, or lettuce, bread, apples and so on. Then a couple of days before she cooked them she'd withhold any food (but I'm not sure if everyone does the latter).

It'll be easier to make slippers if they have matching colours...

Let them feed on slightly wet bread flour for a week, then no food for two day.
Remove shell and wash in salt water
Simmer on a very hot plate in butter and garlic
Enjoy!

If they're eating your crops, turn them into one!

We have those giant snails here in Fl. They obviously an im[port gone wild...like Burmese Pythons, Monitor lizards, and many other escaped exotics. They will eat the stucco off your house to help build their shells. They also carry a few diseases, so not sure if I would eat them.
Guinea pigs on the other hand...they have pig in their name- case closed. Mini bacon strips?

The giant snails brings back bad memories of the snail farm section of Lightwater Valley in the UK. We visited it back in '88 and all I can remember is the humidity and the dingy yellow-brown lighting, and hundreds and hundreds of snails all stuck to the glass walls. Big and little snails, all stuck to the glass being all slow and slimy. Blech!
