Yes i can remember Mr manual labour about as enjoyable as toothache,when i started my sump i hit clay,then paid some one to do the rest,job done,the labour costs here are so low roughly £3 per day,with most of the farm hands readily taking up the work.Most of the guys are multi skilled to go with it,the guy that finished the digging came back and did the rendering after i finished the block work,he farms sweet corn for his main profession,drinks Lao Cow for his second and odd jobs for any time he has left.

Almost there mate. You mentioned you get regular rain showers. Are you getting any water seepage into the hole?

Not yet. God willing, the showers will hold off until I get the last few inches of dirt removed. This job is dirty enough without turning it into a mud wrestling event.

Scotty this the locally brewed White Whiskey about 40% proof,most villages here have there own mini brewer,its not to bad a drink and its cheap a 500 ml water bottle full is about 80 pence UK money,they will also supply it in a plastic bag.....

I bought 2 sheets of 1/2" treated ply and a can of asphalt emulsion sealer & dampproofer
which was recommended by the guy at City Mill (local hardware store). I plan to paint both sides of the treated
ply and drop them between the cage and the earth walls. They should last forever!

Mate, that's a LOT of soil. I'll have to plan for that when I did mine out. Where to put it all ?!

One thing (of many) that I love about this forum is that there is usually someone who is doing, or has recently done, whatever you are about to do. You are never completely on your own. So cool.

I have some low spots around the yard that I think can take up this soil. There is quite a bit but if I spread it around it show disappear pretty easily. I do have to go pick up a wheel barrel for the job. I'm gonna need a wheel barrel anyway when it comes time for cinder.

Surely all that soil will go into wicking beds a la JT's style. Then you have perfect places for the rooting veg like Tate's, parsnip, carrots, and then maybe some half size wicking beds for the orchard trees.

At least, that is my plan when the space becomes available

That is an excellent idea. I should really consider picking up some barrels for just that purpose.

Well, today I assembled and attached the base to the second growbed. I also cut, sealed and
installed the ply sheets into the sump tank hole. It's kind of hard to see the ply in the hole
next to the IBC cage but its in there. They aren't secured or anything. They're just kind of dropped
in there. The sealant was still tacky when I dropped it in but I don't think it will be a problem. I
guess the next step will be to get rid of that huge pile of dirt so I can start placing my growbeds.
