And please stick with that Brian! My intentions were always to make a biopod style unit, but out of concrete. I live in a townhome, and don't have the space or need for something massive.

Today I made the base. I used the pervious concrete instructions given here.

First I made a ring of bricks around my mold. Then I placed in a tarp, and filled it with red lava rock, scoria to everyone here. I weighed it and used the weight to figure out how much concrete and water to weigh out. I followed the 7:1 aggregate to concrete ratio. In hind sight, I perhaps should have gone with a 6:1 as red scoria has a bit more surface area than other aggregates. Then for every pound of cement, .32 pounds of water. Everything was mixed up by passing the mix between two buckets.

I then put in half of the mixture, then laid in 4 wires for the armature that will be used for the ferrocement sides.

File comment: You have to look carefully to see the wires.

Next I put the rest of the concrete in. Finally I plopped the mold on top of it.

The whole thing is wrapped in plastic for now. We don't want all of the water to evaporate out before the cement cures.

Yea, I built it. The ferrocement work was messy, so I did not take pictures of the process. It still has yet to be colonized by BSFL. :upset:

Thanks for the reply Ron. I found that pouring milk over bread in a small container is a good attractant for them. Hope you get some larvae soon

Hi Ron

do you have a picture of the final result? All the pictures shows it wrapped up in plastic!

Are you ashamed at showing the final result?

No actually I am quite proud! I just don't have any BSFL in it yet. Lots of fruit flies...

Let's see the finished product. I don't mind that the BSF don't like it yet.

It has been almost a year, and still no BSFL, perhaps it is a bust...

What are using on top of the food? I have found the best cover material is just straw/grass/hay whatever you call it. The adults love laying their eggs in the grass knowing the food is underneath for the babies. Here is the link to the unit I made in 2012 https://hotrockacreshomestead.wordpress ... ufa-style/ If you google "hypertufa bsfl" all the hotrockacreshomestead pages are me.

I definitely put dry plant trimmings on top, but is think spiders did too well of a job colonizing it.
