Hiya,

I was just wondering if there is anything I can or should do about one of my trout. Since they went in on Saturday I've noticed one has a penchant for swimming vertically. Not always though, it is capable of darting off and swimming normally, but when it tries to swim on the spot it struggles a lot and goes head up.

Should I leave it be or try to help it somehow? A couple of photos show what I mean, and if you click the youtube vid it takes off from the point where you can really see it struggling.

Is there anything I should be doing? The others seem fine, this one just wants to be a Rory Calhoun; standing and walking (someone has to get that reference, lol).

Any help you can give I'd appreciate. :)

Usually means it will die eventually. Just keep an eye on it and remove it when it goes belly up.

That's what I suspected. :( Aww, I don't want any to die. Well, not until I catch them to eat anyway, lol.

Yea it's never fun, I don't think there would be many members here that haven't lost at least one trout in there experiences. Especially when they are small. Just make sure you leave them alone and don't try catch them or anything, feed lightly and keep your eye on them.

I have to move 10 of them into the other system tomorrow but other than that I am trying to leave them alone. I don't want to stress them out too much and just make things worse!

How many fish do you have in tank one at the moment? With how much GB volume.

20 in the one IBC system at the moment, wet media is a bit over 200lt from memory. Not enough to cope with 20 trout long term, hence putting 10 in each system.

Right.

Mind you 200L of media isn't really enough to cope with 10 trout long term either.

Unless you are removing solids.

I was planning on fishing them out gradually once the biggest get to around the 300g mark, so as they all grow there will be a gradual reduction in the amount of fish actually in each tank. I also figured that there's a possibility I'd lose some early on, as seems to be the case.
