After many failed attempts at Barra, and running at hydroponics for the last two seasons, I have chosen to change to Yabbies. Researching food for them I am led to believe they are vegetarians and like sinking food. Does backyard aquaponics stock yabby pellets? If not, does anyone know any stockists in WA.
Has anyone tried feeding them fruit?
Anything information I should know about my new venture would be great.

Growing Yabbies in AP is probably a step up from growing Barra mate, not a step back. From the feedback I've received on the forum here, yabbies don't take too well in plastic bottoms. They like muddy environments and can be very territorial in confined spaces. Unless you have a dam or something.

I've only just built my first IBC AP system and have been using Silver Perch, haven't ran into any problems yet, that said its only been 6 weeks. But history has it that perch is a good fish to go with, be it Jade or Silver.

Yabbies are omnivores. I use marron pellets, google it and you should be able to find some.

I've been using chicken layer pellets.. seemed like a good idea since they need a lot of shell making stuff too..

Try stock feed stores for marron pellets.

Yeah, I think you are making life even harder for yourself trying to use Yabbies.. You may also want to check about having yabbies up that way, fisheries may not like it.. Do you get redclaw up there?

Day 2 of Yabbies, not sure what type they are. They came from somewhere local and were free as opposed to $12.50 per Barra after fuel delivery costs etc.

They appear to be happy hiding in the many hide holes i have arranged for them.
At the moment they are eating laying pellets.

Yabbies love lupins so you could always supplement their food with some along with the other pellets.

Lupins are a great option. Also snails, slugs, worms, carrot, peas, potato etc

I'm keen to know how you planned for them and what obstacles etc. you placed in the ST for hiding places..

I was give ten "Yabbies" some weeks back..
in a small inside aquarium, (to avoid the still low ST temperature) I ended with just three..
Two FM and one M.. they must have known not to eat the last male..
At least Yabbies appreciate the male of the species..

One was found carrying fry, about 20 days ago, and I finally removed her from the babies this AM..

I plan to grow them a bit in the small aquarium and then into the ST..

what did you feed the tiny babies..? I am trying gold-fish flakes..

So far in the ST, I have Holy-Marble and various other marble frags, stacked randomly..
Thinking of cutting up some lengths of conduit and toss them in..

Any proven techniques that work??

I understand that Red-Claw are a far better option, and I will happily await getting some of them..

I fed my baby yabbies crushed up Marron pellets.

Don't think the flakes will be ok as they float?

A potato sack or crunched up shade cloth is good for the young so the bigger ones can't get them. Just be cautious as sludge can build up in it.

My yabbies are quite partial to my goldfish? Well half of one, I buy my feed from city farmers, made by blue planet, called crayfish food on the label, you have to be careful with layer pellets as it can contaminate your water, I also use Vege Wafers for a change sometimes,
