in tassie i get 3kwh on average per day from a 1kw solar system, thats averaged over 2 years. So when thinking about solar for my aquaponics i worked on 3X the power of the panel to get my daily power. So for a 200W panel ill get 0.6kwh per day. I run a 35W pump 24/7 so im thinking im going to need 2 x 200w panels and a 100AH battery.

im currently in a similar scenerio to you, planning what im going to do with grid power when solar isnt enough and having it kick in when its needed(but never too soon as i dont want to defeat the purpose of the solar). The solar controller i bought cuts power to peripherals at 12v(dead flat) so im thinking of having that trip a relay that then allows the mains power in to charge for 30minutes(timed relay). Got 2 timed relays off ebay headed my way to play with to see if i can make something work.

Would love to hear how you go with that.
Cheers
