What are people's opinions on solids separation for this system? Is solids separation needed for a system like this with two flood and drain grow beds?

Solids separation would allow the pumps to go in an adjacent sump instead of the tanks.

I did just pour in some sea sol a few hours ago. I've just gone and looked at the sea sol bottle. I think it's over 200ml that's gone in since the systems been up.

If you have nitrites then your system isn't cycled or you're over feeding.

My systems took 2 weeks in summer and 4 weeks or so in winter.

Great system. I've been looking over outdoor systems, as that is stage 2 for us. Your system look sharp. I especially like the teeter-totter flow switch. Great job!

You would be adding unnecessary complication. unless you over-stock the fish you will not need solids separation IMO.

with I guess about 400L of filtration (wet media) in your GB you should be able to handle up to 20 fish.

Groovy water switching valve, nice work. have you considered using a tougher hinge?
maybe an SS shaft drilled through the end fittings?
