But seriously I think the bottom of a RFF would be too anaerobic for crays unless you clean it out very regularly
which I dont

Yep!! :)

Ok, it all started with wanting to grow Crays but not knowing where to put them. I've never caught on to putting them into the sump because I want to keep the system (on the other side of the RFF & BioF) from as much fish crap as possible. I'm not sure if I can add Crays to the FT or not? The next thing I need clarification on is can you eat Redclaws? If not, which Crays can you eat?

yabbies tend to live in holes in the mud, probably a cleaner environment than the bottom of a dirty RFF, but probably not the highest oxygen environment.
i dont see why they couldnt help a bit, but you will only fit 1 in an RFF, so dunno if there is alot of point.
you also need to clean the RFF, so if you are doing partial drains, yabby could get injured when/ if it gets sucked out.

Crustaceans are a PITA in AP if you don't know what your doing. If you can go and catch them somewhere well that would be easier than trying to grow them. They are slow growing, very fussy with water quality and can get infections quite easily in recirculating system and they don't fair too well in hard bottom tanks. The grow out time and success rate is very ordinary compared to doing a weekend trip and throwing some nets in.

My brother in law has a creek that runs through his property and he says there are freshwater crays in it, I haven't been yet but he says that are blue so that cancels out redclaw so I'm not sure what they might be though cause he says they have long thin claws like scampy. Any ideas mate? Other than that I've got my eyes set on some waterways in the area but I've just been so busy. I've done a lot of crabbing while I've been here too and man they are tasty little buggers.

Paul Van der Werf would know for sure what they are as he does or did a lot of work with a society up that way that researches' fresh water crays. There are some really strange looking varieties in those parts.
Fresh crabs would be an ok alternative though :D
I think the tidal lakes up there have prawns as well :dontknow:

Cheers for your input people, after all said and done I think I'll give the Crays a miss! Sounds like more trouble than its worth.

Yea Paul was doing some work with Rob McCormack (crustacean guru) who both are with the NSWAA. Rob has done a lot of work with yabbies, crays and all those things over the past few decades, Ive read a lot of his books, very knowledgable bloke. My idol for many years and I hope to meet him one day.
