Hi
This is one of a batch of trout fingerlings I got from a very reputable source about 13 days ago. But he looks completely different to his mates.
He is much blacker than the others, swims slowly on the surface and seems to have ‘bulgy” eyes.
Is he sick or an alien?
I am cycling my tank. Ammonia and Nitrites started to rise so I did 25% water change on two consecutive days. Stabilized but still rising. So I stopped feeding, switched to constant running (from 15/45) and added salt at 1ppt.
All the other fish seem happy: and no sign of “flashing’ Which I understand to mean rubbing themselves on the bottom or side of the tank.
So. Is he an alien or sick? If sick should I move him to a smaller tank and increase the salt to say 5ppt for say 10/50 OR is it Adios Amigo?
Thanks
Titus

Hi
I had a long chat with the fisheries manager and it seems the little fella got a bacterial infection. This then often presents in trout as blackened skin and ‘popeye’
The addition of salt did help but removal and disposal were the best course of action.
All his mates are fine

Probably for the best to knock it on the head, the last thing you'd want is it to infect your other fish.
