I've had a no holes siphon made of 13mm black poly pipe between my sump and a container growing duckweed for years with out any blockage or problems. I didnt even know it[blockage] was a problem

I get PLENTY of strange looks, but there's usually a touch of (what I hope is) fondness as well - I've worked with a bunch of these people off and on for over seven years and they're not only great coworkers - they're also quite tolerant of my eccentricities.

Believe me - "Aquaponics" isn't my only eccentricity. Not that anyone on this forum has reason to care, but just FYI - here's evidence of another:

I read coworkers as "cow orkers" and still thought it seemed reasonable, so you're in good company here :)

For some reason I didn't understand what you meant so I looked up "cow orkers" and from the urban dictionary found...

Quote:
orking
of animals: thrusting one's snout into a camera's lens when your photograph is taken, resulting in a fish-eye view where the nose appears disproportionately large.

The photographers who encourage this are known as orkers. Most notably: Cow Orkers, given cows' propensity to enable this.

Also: puppy orking, cat orking.
Awww this orking kitten picture is soooo cute!

I've always seen the people(?) I work with that way

It's amazing what a difference a dash makes :)

I finally found a duckweed pond when riding my Harley last week, the owner of the property was a bit apprehensive about letting me have some but after promising not to let it go into any waterways she agreed.
My three week old Jade perch love it and I am using it to suppliment my pallets, I am growing it on rafts in my system and in buckets with no airstones.

I wish I could find some around here. with the bad rep it has, you would think it would be everywhere. not so.

I may have to break down and order it over the internet. :/

Before you order any, check with one of your local residential or business "aquarium servicing" companies. At least down here in DFW they often have duckweed that they've cleaned out of a client's tank or pond and if so then they'll probably just give it to you. That's how I got one of the two duckweed varieties I have.

I try hard not to grow duckweed. It comes into our systems when we top off from the lake on the property. It gets all in the DWC rafts beds and it's like trying to get rid of roaches. I skim it out and feed it to the fish but it just comes back again and gets all on the rafts. The plants in the rafts don't like the duckweed sticking to them UGH

In my planted aquariums with pressurized co2 it was incredibly frustrating. you cannot get rid of the stuff when it's in your tank. It sticks to everything and 1 leaf turns into 20 overnight hahaha. I was so pleased to learn it is a sustainable fish food supplement.

I have some pictures of a duckweed growing tray in my system thread.

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7958&start=45

The duckweed is growing well now. Strangely it started with duckweed but I had a dieoff (don't remember why) and I had some other similar plant growing that was not duckweed. However just in the past month or two or so the weather has been warming and the sun is out more and the growth has been taken over again by normal duckweed. Very strange.

On a nice sunny day I can grab a palm full and give it to the fish and they enjoy it.

The inlet into the tray runs on the same timer as the pump. I have found that without aeration the water seems to get scummy on the surface after a few days. The duckweed doesn't like having an airstone in there all the time so I just put in an airstone for a few hours every few days and that helps freshen up the water.

Found duckweed less than a mile from the house. A friends cow water hole is loaded with it.
