I have only one large 34cm or so silver perch in a 500L BYAP sump running a BYAP grow bed (yellow 2m x 1m - I'm guessing around 500L) and havnt got around to setting up my IBC to run some trout so I'm having some problems with a lack of nutrient. ccBear dropped in for a visit, and recommended Seasol. I add some seasol from time to time, and I can always add some fish emulsion, but I'm a bit worried about my grow bed's worm population.

Is fish emulsion exactly the same as the solids that exit fish? Or is it concentrated nutrient that wont have enough food for my worms?

A while ago the invention engine suggested I add food scraps directly to a container full of holes sitting on the surface of media so they could move into it at will.

Can anyone think of a reason why incorporating a worm farm directly onto a growbed might be a bad idea? (given I currently lack nitrates)

I have a small worm feeding facility in the corner of a growbed on both my systems 100mm pipe with holes drilled in it dug into the gravel full depth . I drop banana peels in there mostly , makes it easy to see when they are gone better than trying to remember where I buried them , also handy for tipping in seasol ect . At the moment they are half full of marbel sized limestone figure I can hook them out if required but of course I don't need to , need more . I have a siphon system so everything that goes in gets spread around if your Constant flood you might need to sight it in a flow stream (between inflow and outlet) . I have a cover over the feed pipes to keep light out .

cool

That sounds like a vote for giving it a go.

Do you add banana for the potassium?

My growbed has a 90mm PVC pipe across the width of each end as both entry and exit, so the entire bed should have good flow, but I think I might try it right in the middle at the point of water inlet just to be safe.

Thanks for the feedback.

+1 on the 90mm pipe in the grow bed. I have a screw cap on mine and it makes it easy to harvest worms as well s add whatever I need.

I sooooo want a Mr Fusion :)

If my memory serves me correctly, I think he added banana peels and egg shells. Perfect for an aquaponics system's needs. :)

Excellent.

I guess you could just lift it up and there would be worms hanging off the bottom.

I've skimmed off a stack of duckweed from my fishtank/sump, because I think it's taking too much nitrate, and have been drying it out to kill it. I'll add that back into the new 90mm PVC worm farm and see how it goes.

Does anyone else do this worm farm in the growbed thing?

That YouTube clip was a weird edit. The beer was Miller High Life.
