Thanks for all the intelligent conversation to date folks. I've learned a lot.

I have a small setup in my backyard (only 90 gallons) and I want to create a series of sensors that track the data and, if anything is wrong (=outside a predetermined range), it sends me an email.

I see that temp & pH are reasonably doable, but has anyone figured out nitrates and nitrites? I saw the conversation veer there earlier in the thread but then it disappeared.

Any progress from the folks who haven't posted in a while?

Thanks again!

Nice work :)
I played around with a PIC a while ago, opening and closing various valves and water level sensors, that kinda thing.
I have been away from AP for a while due to RL commitments, but have just started rebuilding my system after a house move.
No electronics at the moment, the mechanical side was rather high maintenance and I don't have the time for that right now.

well I have sensors for $250 DO , $200 EC , $80 PH

Currently looking for Ammonia/Nitrate/Nitrite sensors

seneye does Ammonia fairly cheaply so it is possible ...
the fact that you unlock options with your licensing with them I am actually thinking they are just using a "spectrometer"

so I might start along that approach soon , I have found code to train it to identify chemicals

The Seneye stuff is based on strip tests with a colorometer as you said. Not exactly high precision and each slide only lasts a month. $10 a month adds up fast.

I've searched high and low for ammonia and nitrate probes. Never found anything reasonably affordable.

That is my excuse for not being over keen on instrumentation ..
It is not practical to measure the really important figures, and you can design the system such that if the air is flowing, then all should be well.. ie .. there is nothing more you need to know.. ie.. you can't get any more air into it anyway..
So if the...circulation pump(s) are working, then there is no real reason to have have such detailed information, other than from being a detail-junkie.. fascinated by graphs and plots ..

YES.. I think I have convinced myself. It is all unnecessary ... But.. I would still like to have a go.. :upset:
..
