my total setup....

about 1500 php for the pipe and elbows
600 for the pump
about 200 for the air pump
about 100 in feeder fish(originally)

can't beat that price...yeah it's not as neat but it does the job...:) :) :)

I have gravel

I heard somewhere that you need to gravel to actually generate the nitrite from the fish effluent...is there some truth to that? or will the biofilter do?

thanks in advance...

Hi Demet....

here's the eBay link to something very similar to your setup...
although it's hydroponic... this is his cheap unit... LOL

Interesting that part of his kit is
"02 Plus Bacteria and Mould treatment."
I'm assuming he wants to kill bacteria while we AP'ers are trying to foster bacteria.

Demet, any good surface area to house the bacteria will work fine. The bacteria will happily live in gravel or a store-bought biofilter. In essence, our growbeds are giagantic biofilters.

I am one of those DIY impaired people. I can give something that already works a facelift, but when it comes to wiring and timers etc. I may as well forego the attempt at being constructive and skip right to sticking my finger in a socket and writhing about on the floor. Hell, I can't even drill a drain hole and install a bulkhead without a leak the size of Niagra falls. I imagine had I tried to DIY my dutch pot system I would have spent about half the money, but the stuff would have ended up in a leaking heap in my garage without having ever produced even a happy memory, much less a plant or fish. I am just thankful for the free market where people like you guys can figure out how to make things work so people like me can SURVIVE! Every time a natural disaster hits and I hear reports of people dying AFTER the fact trying to hook up generators etc, I think that would be ME! :geek:

I thought that was the reason they invented electric fences to stop people peeing indiscriminately

I saw my brother do that. Jumped backwards 2 meters from a standing start (peeing start). I ended up being in more agnoy than he did. He recovered after about 10mins. I still had cramps from laughing so hard days later.
