Yes sir, going to hold off for several days before feeding and see if the levels drop.

Probably will remove some fish and throw them in the pond as well

The reading is at .5, I wouldnt think that is toxic yet, but not that knowledgeable on the subject

That's what the chart will tell you - For example if your Temp is 20 and your pH is 8.2 a Total Ammonia Nitrogen level of .34 or above indicates toxic levels. Granted different fish are more or less susceptible.

Doing a 1/3 water change if very easy the way I have the pluming setup. The PH of the water is about the same, and its well water so will be cooler.

Would be very easy to do that tonight why I built other tomato cage.

Good, it's looking better, wait for the Ammonia to get all the way down though. Sounds like it worked out pretty well.

FYI - For anyone else out there who's thinking about doing a water change because of their ammonia levels or whatever reason - don't forget that your fish might have troubles if the temperature or pH changes too much. Doing only about a 1/3rd change is probably pretty safe unless things are drastically different.

Pretty easy to do a water transfer with this setup.

Question, do y'all put any type of sucker fish in your sump tanks to help with clean up?

i use pleco's in sumps and fish tanks, They will eat excess food and side algae. I dont consider side algae a problem, but i painted my fish tank white so i could see the fish better and the lagae makes it more difficult.

but i wont use them with LMB.. Most fish will not bother a pleco but I learned LMB will eat even the boney plecos

I use the plecos also, but I have this lady that sells me the real big ones. If I get the little ones from the store the bass eat them.

Got another question or a dumb idea

Have some left over plastic gutters from when I did the gutters on the green house.

Had anyone ever tried a gutter full of media with a small trickle constantly flowing through it?

Maybe for onions or something that wouldnt have a large root system....

Well, if you are bored at night and dont like watching TV, you can always build stuff right?

The fish tank has an overflow, that usually has a little water running through it. So why not make it work for me.

I had some left over gutters from the GH, just had to buy a couple connections.

So far works perfectly except the valve has a small leak, I will give it a week to see if build up stops it, if not will pull it apart PITA

The onion tower is alive

East - Definitely stop feeding and let the levels drop (the Ammonia is what's likely to cause you troubles not the Nitrate). Might want to look and see if you've got any dead fish as well. Worst case you're already at toxic levels. Best case you're just barely outside toxic levels.

tom77 wrote:
That's true but if ammonia is above 2 consistently I would be cutting back on feed anyhow.. wouldn't you?

I think his reading is .5 to 1.0 and not 2 but I'm not sure if you were just pulling that figure out of your hat. My answer is yes if it were 2 but you also need to know how bad things really are. Maybe you'd also want to do water changes or maybe you'd find out you really didn't need to do anything at all if it's the middle of Winter. Most of the time when it's cold enough that you don't need to worry about the Ammonia toxicity it's also cold enough the fish aren't eating much anyway.

Cheers

Well I thought the colour looked like it was between 1 and 2 but reading on East has said it is 0.5 so I guess just my bad eyes or monitor.
But the point I was making was that if someone is getting a constant ammonia reading then something may be wrong and Ph aside it is not likely a good thing. I personally start to look for problems if my ammonia reading is above .25 consistently.
And like you have already mentioned 0.5 at above 8 pH is a potential problem.. and I would be looking at stopping feeding all together and if the fish are behaving odd do a partial water change straight away.

Television sucks, so building Gutter beds is a great idea. It will be interesting to see how things grow in it. :thumbleft:
