Excellent work but a question. It appears that the GB's are nearly hard up against the shed wall. If this is the case would it not have been better to have the syphon/ flood and drain pipe at the front for easier maintenance and inspection.

yes the growbeds are hard up against the hot house but once everything is finished the ground at the front will be raised allowing easy viewing of the standpipe/stoneguard. as this system is also in the middle of a community garden we didn't want kids to be able to get access and play with things or put things inside.

there has been additional factors that we needed to take into account when designing this system... there is always method to my madness

What is the size of the growbeds when they are cut vertically? I'm trying to estimate rock locally and not sure how much liters or cubic feet I would need to get with my car.

i estimate that each growbed is approx 400-450 litres. we had 1.5 cubic metres (approx 5 cubic feet) of scoria and didn't have much left over.

Iceman, I'm trying to make a change to my system to put in a couple of SLO pipes like you did in yours. What size pipe did you use? 25 mm? (1 inch)? would that be enough for a system like this one?

I also really like your water jug radial filters. How do those work out on a system like this? I'm using a 55 gallon barrel as an RFF, but in the new configuration, I'd have to burry it, and I'm thinking of switching to the water jug idea. Would that still work to collect some solids?

Hi Greendesert,
the SLO's in this one are twin 40mm (1.5"), personally this is as small as i would go but it also depends on the size of the fish tank and stocking density.

I won't be adding an RFF to this system unless the guys at Shoestring want to harvest solids for their numerous dirt gardens. that said, the water jug works a treat with its conical base. i empty it on a regular bases and my dirt gardens are growing well. a 55 gallon RFF is massive, how big is your system? personally i wouldn't bury the RFF and wouldn't use one that massive, you want to be able to get a bucket under the outlet (i know this can e done easily) and you may also want to drain right out to give it a good clean. i know i drain my small one and hose out any 'funk' build up easily.
