I'm in the process of setting up my first aquaponic system and I'm looking at fountain pumps on eBay and I was wondering what would happen if I bought a pump that had a higher gph then what I probably need.

I have a 20gal tank and my grow bed can prob hold 5-10 gallons of water. I have a $20 budget for my pump and the low gph pumps are less then $10. I can get a 400gph pump for my budget but would that be a overkill? I would think that as long as I had control valves attached to the pvc and control the amount of water flow that it shouldn't be a issue.

Run a bleed line from the pump line back in to your fish tank. Put a valve on it so you can control the amount of water being returned. You could run the return through a spray bar to help with oxygen in your tank

So I would have one line coming from the pump, then at some point that one line will split up in to two lines with one leading to the grow box and the other one would wrap back around into my fish tank? In return giving my oxygen into the tank??

+1 ccBears advise.

On a small system I ran the overflow under the water and added a venturi.

Check out this video

Nice work on the venturi design ccBear!

Thanks for the advice ccBears. There is a lot of options, I honestly can't make up my mind on how I'm going to do this. After watching the video(thanks aboman) I'm liking the venturi idea. That video was extremely informative.

Hope they help the 90 degree bend does not form part of the venturi. Mine come straight of my line or is placed in line then with a 45 degree bend and pipe to the water. Cheers
