Yes. Overstocking the tanks certainly would have that effect. Too much ammonia can delay the second phase of cycling as the nitrifying bacteria that convert nitrites to nitrate can be killed by too much ammonia.

Ok makes sense. With this information being said, a few fishes were caught and given away. Tanks went down probably a dozen. I think we need to get rid of a few more... every 5 liters of water 1 fish is what i heard... so 100 liters, 20 fish.

We fried some of them up. I know these arent going to get too big due to the size of the refs, but family was happy.

One of the grow beds doing really well. Native chili, squash, bitter gourd, kangkong(Native veg) and beans.

Second bed, which was planted a tad later than first. Tomatoes, eggplant, beans, and watermelon. Will probably plant more since space...

Thats all for what is current with my system. The summer heat is here in the Philippines so lets see what happens!

Happy Sunday Folks!

Bone meal will provide phosphorous, not potassium. Banana skins have potassium in, you could also google making your own potash. eg

So now Im wondering if I were to ever come across this problem with my eventual system could I use ceramic grade potash? Is it the same? I work with clay and have 50 lbs of the stuff for clays and glazes. Is fertilizer potash the same as ceramic grade potash? hmmm I gotta know because it would make it easy to add being its such a fine grade mesh size

:edit: looks like a no, well not an entire no. It just does release the potassium quick enough for farmers. Wonder if its little but not to fast for Aquaponics? Im only considering it because its quite cheap to buy if youre close to a ceramic supplier.

Make Up of it

CaO 0.30% 0.033
K2O 10.00% 0.66
Na2O 3.00% 0.30
Al2O3 17.00% 1.04
SiO2 69.00% 7.18
Fe2O3 0.15% 0.006
LOI 0.30

I know there are different types of clay, but are all properties the same? when you say ceramics, you are talking about the dry clay that is NOT fired yet?

Here in the Philippines most of the people dont have disposable income for activities. I think I have seen a shop that makes ceramic pots from the local clay. I don't know if it would consist of the say properties.

Thanks for the insight! Back in the states I know where I can get my hands on ceramics.

Sigh... things will be easy to get my hands on in the states.

Hey guys!

Sorry I have been away from the boards for a while. I have been having some eye problems, so I am in Manila trying to figure it all out.

Papa say things are doing well. we shall see when I return to my province! Squash was taking over. Cant wait to see it.

Hope everyone is staying cool on these hot days!

FYI - There are lots of chemicals used in making pottery that I wouldn't want in an AP system. Many glazes used in Pots contain metals for example. Just recommend that you proceed with caution.

Thoughts... Cucumber is hard to grow in ap. Plant lots, one will likely survive, and when it does it will reward you with many a cucumber.

Btw cool thread. I am going to be following this.

Weird, cucumbers did so well in my system I stopped planting them. They would take over everything. They where so thick I could not even find all the cucumbers.

Ya, I was wondering if using dry clay that wasnt fired yet. Definitely not glazed items.
