I need to make the decision on weather to run flexible tubing or PVC from my pump.
I used the search function and could not find anything about this topic. Is there conventional wisdom for which method is best?

If I were to use PVC I would probably run the pump up through the bottom of the fish tank using a bulkhead.

If you pipe size is large enough then the friction loss from two 45 degree bends (to get out from under the FT) and then two 90 degree bends to go over the top will be minimal and certainly less than what you would get from a flexible pipe.

Pipe diameter from pump is 1/2" (1.27cm). I was thinking for PVC I would just use a double threaded bulkhead through the bottom of the tank and eliminate any bends at all.

400GPH (1500 liters per hour)

The pump comes with a barbed fitting of that exact diameter, I will be replacing it for a PVC fitting.

I'd second the PVC pipe, makes it easier to get a permanent connection.

I use these to connect to the PVC:

Works like a charm, and makes it easier to go up a size in pipes (which creates less friction). I've got a 25mm barbed outlet going to a 40mm PVC pipe. Then it's travelling 7 meters side wards, and a meter up. Doesn't seem to loose too much pressure.
