hi everybody.

i recently grew goldfish at my aquarium for pleasure purpose. i have 8 small goldfish each 8 cm long. i do water change every week and it's very exhausting and wasting time to do.

Few days ago, I see a video on youtube that tells me that the guy never do water change for year. I astonishing and interest. but after I ask him, he didn't replied.




I very newbie here, so I made sketch about what i saw on the video and want to ask to everybody here, whether this is possible to do.



I prefer to put my aquarium indoor because i can enjoy the fish without getting out, and i prefer lavender since it smells good and i have read it somewhere that lavender could be grown with aquaponics.

Sure, this is a very easy AP system to make and will work fine.

The foam is not necessary and you can totally use gravel instead of hydroton.

Did you mean LED or Fluorescent lights instead of UV?

I agree with Dave, you should be able to setup a system like that very easily. It will take some time for the filtration to get going (maybe a month with warm water temps). The lighting is my only question.

if you are using a filter, you can squeeze the media out into your growbed to "kickstart" the cycling process

Where will you find the energy to do the construction of this system when the water changes on a 29 gallon tank are exhausting!?

If you are using a filter, there is no reason to not keep using it and simply add the bed, then you wodnt upset your system and wont have to start the cycling again.

If you dont want to clean the filter anymore, then just leave it on for a few months, then remove filter after the bed has also cycled.

thanks scotty, yes, I mean fluorescent lights which help the plants to keep growing without sunlight.
probably the other has info about the lights.

It could mean that you don't need water changes as long as your grow bed has adequate volume of media to process the waste from the fish... when you get it going you might throw in a few worms into the bed to help it along as well

i put my aquarium at the living room. actually, it's not condusive to put it that way. if there's a water even a drop i have to clean it. plus the living room a bit far from the front yard. so i use big bucket to moving the water from the aquarium to the front yard manually. after the draining process finish, i have to do it again to do the filling process...

after 5 times doing it, i start to think the better way to do water changes and start searching.

do you mean, i dont need any filter except the bed and the plants?

where the worm lived? it could lives in the water media? inside the filter or the bed? the bed could also be gravel, right?

Yes because the water has a high level of oxygen due to the circulation of water the worms can live anywhere where there is water... I see them crawling around on the bottom of my sump and it has no media at all in it... and yes your bed could use gravel... the only thing to consider is that gravel is much heavier than hydroton/expanded clay so if you need to lift the bed at all to get to your fish tank then consider if gravel will be too heavy... but gravel is much cheaper than hydroton/expanded clay.

the one i thought when use worms at gravel is when i need to clean it and remove the gravel, the worms could get hurt because of the gravel.
