Azira:

I wont bother if I have to feed them green algae or liquid phytoplankton, I don't think the guys that have them in their tanks add anything extra for their Mussels, I think it was the heat that got mine and not the lack of food.

Yavimaya:

These fellas came from Aquablue also, so I think they should be the same type as yours.

I've got a brother who is about to order Silver Perch from Aquablue so I'll get him add 3 Mussels in with his order and see how they get on in the cooler weather and add a few more later in the year.

In the meantime I'm back to the Google Machine to see if I can find any further info on their feeding requirements.

Thanks again Guys.

Hi Joblow - I have also lost a few mussels over the past month - 6 only surviving out of 10. AP System salted to 3ppt due to loss of Silver Perch Fingerlings - I do not think the salt killed the mussels. Over this time we have had very high temperatures - I'm sure high temperatures was cause.
Regards - Colin

Hi Colin,

That's about when it happened, during that week of over 42°C for 4 days, It's only that I've just found them.

Everywhere I read there's salinity problems for the little fellas but no figures below 3ppt it's all environmental research just saying they are dying off in numbers because of salinity but not saying how high that salinity is.

I'm seeing people say they need green water or plankton for food but I don't know anyone who adds either to their system, Ive read of guys with aquariums doing it but no one in AP.

Thanks Colin

I've got heaps in my system and have had for three years. Couple of hundred at least. Salted up to 3PPT which usually gets a 20kg bag added into the tank each time I top up. I just chuck it all straight in so they would see a small spike for a while until it settles down. And mine have breed also, but I too have lost a couple over the years.

Great stuff Muzza.

Do you feed them anything? I keep reading about green water and plankton but I don't think that is necessary in AP.

I'm starting too miss my crystal clear water and I'm looking forward to re-stocking but I want to make sure I know and understand their needs an issues fully before I do.

Hey Joblow, no special diet for them at my place. I've got some in my sump which has a sealed concrete base and is very clean, in my brush filter which accumulates waste and in my concrete pond which ends up with sand and leaf rubbish in it.

That's exactly what I wanted too hear Muzza, I want to keep 1 or 2 in sump and with the water being filtered I was wondering if there would be enough in the water to keep them fed.

Your guys in the brush filter would getting a lot more to eat than the guys in the sump, is there any difference is their size or condition?

You soon see the difference when you've had some in the system and then they're gone, both the sump and the FT definitely are not as clean as they were when the little fellas were on the job.

Muzza how are those Red Fin going?

Joe

Hey Joblow, can'y say I take to much notice of the mussels in the system. I still have a few Redfin but not for long. Waste of time for me as I'm not home often enough to feed them.

Santalum - Westralunio carteri are the local mussels I have.
