Hi all, I am new to aquaponics. I am on my planning/gathering stage of setting up my very CHIFT PIST and I would like to ask all knowledgeable Apers some advice.
I’ve recently acquired 2 IBC totes which I am planning to use as a FT (1 whole IBC with just the top bit cut off) and the 2nd IBC (already cut) as GB (1 * 400 mm H) and the other as a sump tank (400 mm H).
My (silly) questions are:
- Does 400mm GB to big and deep for Affnan siphon (GB 1m*1m*400mm)?
- Would a 25 mm (with a 25mm to 40 mm reducer) PVC standpipe suit this GB?
- For the siphon, do I need to drill a ‘drip hole’ at the base of the standpipe?
- How high should be the GB from the ground (400 mm H - sump tank underneath)?
- On the FT, I would like to install a SLO but worried that it might overflow and I am not sure what is the ideal PVC size I should use?
- I’m also not sure with SLO outlet to Gb PVC pipe I should use?
- For submersible pump, I am looking at getting the Hozelock Cascade 400 (http://www.rockaroundtheblock.com.au/po ... -3344.html) at rockaroundtheblock. Has anyone got any experience with this pump? Good or bad?
I do apologise in advance if my silly questions have already been answered before but I thought I post it anyway to get some feedback and help. I will some pics as I work on it, at the moment only weekends is available for me due to work commitment. Thanks in advance.

400mm should work fine, mine are 300mm and I get a flood and drain every 15 minutes.

I have that arrangement on one of my grow beds and I reckon it works better than my others do.

If you plan on turning off the pump overnight this would be advisable.

I have mine around waist height.
If you're going to have the pump in the sump you will want to leave enough room so you can get to the pump for cleaning/removing.

You could have an overflow pipe running back to the sump to be safe.

I use 50mm but others here use larger diameters, other members could probably answer better than me.

Don't know
I'm still relatively a noobie so wait for more answers before you decide how you will set up your system :thumbright:

Hi HC, thanks for the feedback.
It is good to know that 400mm GB will work as I've already cut it. I will start piecing together the siphon this weekend when I get the chance, as for the drip hole, since I will be on cycling stage for the next 6-8 weeks, I will leave the pump on (when I get one) 24*7 for now and decide later if I want continuous or just a bubbler overnight.

I'm also still sourcing a bathtub to use a sump and I will arrange the height of the GB accordingly with enough room for pump/sump maintenance as you suggested.

As for the SLO, i will check/copy other members design but will consider your suggestion again about overflow pipe back to the sump.

I'm still undecided on the 'Hozelock' pump, the other option I have is the 'Laguna Powerjet Maxflo 4000' http://www.creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/ ... rpumps.htm although a bit pricey but some members have good feedback about it.

Thanks again, cheers.
