Hello!
My family and I have been working on becoming more self-sufficient. We have also been looking at reducing or eliminating unnecessary bills. So the thought came to me a little awhile ago that instead of opening our swimming pool as usual this coming season we could transform it into an aquaponics system.
SO.... Is it possible, has anyone else in a cold climate (we are planting Zone 6) successfully accomplished this OUTSIDE?
We are definitely DIYers and not looking to spend, spend, spend. We could incorporate a greenhouse overtop possibly and maybe even heat it using something like a rocket mass heater. Would like to be off-the-grid as much as possible/totally.
Anyone else out there making it work in this way? :flower:

Cooool idea! I live where it's warm everyday of the year (i know... poor poor me) so the idea of a greenhouse covered pond-pool never crossed my mind.

But now that it has, I NEED TO BUILD ONE. I'm sure it would work - sounds ideal actually. Let me know how it grows!

There you go. But not quite what I imagined. I feel like they could have utilized the pool and backyard land and vertical space more.

It's definitely possible but you would definitely need to enclose and heat as you note... and I would definitely make a budget BEFORE you decide to do this. Greenhouse construction is frankly expensive, at least for year-round as opposed to hoop houses. And you'll need a proper GH to keep nitrification going during winter.

That said, if you do it you'll have my dream setup!
